UPDATED: A large sinkhole has appeared on Hope Hill in Shanklin this morning (Wednesday).
The void, measuring around half a metre wide and of unknown depth, has developed in the middle of the carriageway on one of the bends leading down to Shanklin Seafront.
Island Roads are on scene and have set up temporary traffic management as there is just enough room for vehicles to pass. The road remains open at this moment in time but it is unclear if this will continue to be the case as the day goes on.
Hope Hill is the only vehiclar access road to Shanklin Esplanade.
UPDATE @ 12:33 – Island Roads have now announced the closure of Hope Hill to allow for investigation and repair works to be undertaken.
There is no alternative route for traffic.
