SERIOUS CRASH CLOSES ROAD OUT OF SHANKLIN

UPDATED: The main road heading out of Shanklin towards Whiteley Bank has been closed by Police tonight (Friday) as emergency services deal with a serious road traffic collision.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Police and paramedics are all on scene at Godshill Road where it is understood a vehicle has rolled onto its roof.

Fire crews from Sandown, Shanklin and Newport were called to the scene, just a few hundred yards from the junction with Apse Manor Road, at around 23:20.

It is unclear at this stage how many people have been injured as a result of the late night smash.

The road is closed in both directions until further notice.

UPDATE SATURDAY @ 01:15 – A hard road closure has been put in place by Island Roads at the request of Police, indicating the seriousness of the incident.

Debris can be seen spread across the carriageway with apparent tracks up the bank. A second vehicle – a small white Hyundai – remains in-situ on the road facing Shanklin but doesn’t appear to be damaged.

Emergency services have now stood down and left the scene, however the Island’s Roads Policing Officers remain in attendance.

Motorists should divert via Apse Heath and Lake.

UPDATE @ 08:02 – Godshill Road has now re-opened to all traffic.

It has been confirmed that 1 person was conveyed to hospital following the crash. Their condition is unknown at this time.
