A motorhome was destroyed by a fire in East Cowes overnight (Sunday), the latest in a spate of vehicle fires in the area, leaving many local residents wondering whether an arsonist is at large.
Fire crews from Newport and Ryde were called to Kent Avenue in the town at around 00:15.
A fire had started underneath the engine bay of the brand new 72-plate motorhome, quickly engulfing the cab and destroying the engine bay.
The 2 crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames, which were contained to the engine bay area. before the fire could grab hold of a nearby wooden fence – which is now charcoal black.
This wasn’t the only fire in the area last night though, as just around the corner and around 30 minutes earlier, a single crew from East Cowes tackled a blaze of almost identical nature that broke out on Victoria Grove.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were deployed to both scenes and conducted enquiries and investigations with those who watched the fiery madness unfold.
Whilst it hasn’t been confirmed, these incidents are practically identical to 2 that took place on York Avenue back in December where a van containing beer and 1 from a local carpet retailer were also targeted within the space of 10 days.
At that time, Police issued an appeal for anyone with any information regarding the fire and it is believed the same will be done as a result of these latest incidents.
Many local residents are growing concerned about the situation.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Both fires are being investigated as arson.
“As part of any investigation, possible links to other crimes will be investigated. This work is currently ongoing.”
Before all the old gits get here blaming the kids. I would like to remind them that in Carisbrooke some years ago someone was slashing car tiers. All the comments were blaming kids. Turned out to be a 70+ year old man.
