Bad weather has forced the postponement of Sandown’s New Year fireworks display for the second year running.
Plans were in place for the annual New Year’s Day display to take place on the seafront on Wednesday evening.
But adverse weather conditions have led to the decision being taken to postpone the event – just like in 2023.
A yellow weather warning has been issued by the IW Met Service for Wednesday, with the potential for an amber warning to be issued should the forecast continue to deteriorate. The anticipated conditions make it unsafe to host a fireworks display.
A spokesperson from Sandown Carnival has said:
“We had been hoping for the forecast to improve (which it has slightly) but the predicted wind speeds throughout the daytime are still too high for our fireworks contractor to safely set up the display at the end of Sandown Pier. Combined with high tide and likely rough sea conditions, it would not be safe for them to attempt the build.
“Of course, safety comes first and we regret having to take this decision”.
The display will be rescheduled for later in 2025, which will be announced as soon as a new date is confirmed.
That’s good news, thank you weather
It is actually a good event, free too,
you don’t get many things free on the island.
My cats hate them, so do I. There is no thought for the wild life, pets and ex military. The sooner they are banned completely the better.
Well if you put it like that I have to agree with you.
I forgot about the poor animals.
Well, let’s obviously ban everything that you or your cat doesn’t like, because we can’t have people going out, having fun and enjoying themselves, can we? Oh, and donating money to charity at the same time.
While we’re at it, should we perhaps ban cats too because some people don’t like them and find it annoying that they poo in other people’s gardens? Banning everything that some people don’t like can work against you, too.
as I also said it’s not just cats, or other domestic pets that are scared, all the wild Animals, farm animals ex servicemen/women who have fought for this country, who now suffer from ptsd. Hopefully the animal charities will get their way and fireworks will be banned.
Well your a bundle of joy must be nice living around you..sad woman.
A sensible idea, look forward to the event
when rescheduled.
Who was going to pay for them anyway? Council taxpayers?
