59-year-old Andrew Turner, from Sandown, has been charged with arson following a house fire on Beachfield Road in the town yesterday morning (Saturday).
Turner, who himself lives on Beachfield Road, is to appear before Magistrates on Monday charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and possession of a bladed article.
As first reported by Island Echo, 5 fire appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to a detached residential property at 09:00.
Wholetime and retained crews used breathing apparatus, main jets and hose reel jets to bring the incident under control and fully extinguish the blaze, which has caused significant damage to the house.
Suspicious circumstances were identified leading to Police being called to the scene and an arson investigation being launched.
Police last night confirmed they had arrested a 53-year-old man on suspicion of arson. Today they’ve clarified that the detained person is in fact 59-year-old Andrew Turner.
He has been remanded in custody to appear before magistrates in Portsmouth tomorrow morning.
