Concerns over public safety have led to Newport High Street being cordoned off to pedestrians and closed to motorists by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service this afternoon (Saturday).
The Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport has been mobilised to the High Street, where firefighters are working to inspect and make safe something on the roof tops above Grace’s Bakery and Card Factory.
The incident began around 13:30.
All traffic is being diverted locally but the High Street remains open to those on foot, albeit it on the opposite side of the road to the incident.
UPDATE @ 16:17 – The road has now reopened .
It’s understood a loose chimney stack was to blame for the earlier closure.
