Ryde Harriers were among the 1,600 runners taking on the 40th anniversary Gosport Half Marathon on Sunday (16th November), with Isle of Wight athletes delivering strong performances on the fast, flat course.
This year’s event marked 4 decades of what organisers described as “passion, community, and unforgettable memories”, with runners from across Hampshire and beyond descending on Gosport for the popular 2-lap coastal route.
Conditions were far calmer than in 2024 – a year remembered for gale-force winds – and once the race settled into its stride the cold temperatures were soon forgotten. The Harriers arrived early at race HQ at King’s Academy Bay House, where massage facilities and a sports retail stall were available for competitors.
The race began promptly at 10:00, waved off by the town’s mayor, and reached the seafront within the opening mile. Runners followed the East Marine Parade and surrounding paths, avoiding the beach itself apart from a short section over pebbles. The course featured 4 water stations, enthusiastic crowd support and live music, including the rhythmic accompaniment of Gosport’s Big Noise Samba Band.
Those crossing the finish line received a special ‘40 Years and Proud’ anniversary medal, along with goody bags, bananas and drinks.
Event organisers Gosport Road Runners were praised for delivering a well-managed, safe and affordable race that continues to attract large fields year after year. Ryde Harriers are expected to return once again in 2026.
