After a disappointing run in this year’s London Marathon, Ryde Harrier’s Carly Scoble produced an outstanding performance in the popular Verona Marathon, finishing in the very fast time of 2hrs 53min 53sec.
In a field of 6,000 athletes, Carly finished second overall female, and first in her W 35-39 year category.
Conditions in Verona were perfect for marathon running with a cold, dry and still morning and Carly was soon into her running along with Ryde Harrier Will Newnham.
Shortly after the 5km point she looked relaxed and back from the leading ladies, but by the half marathon point which she passed in 1hr 26min 32sec she had closed and was lying in 5th place.
Carly had to dig deep as she entered the last 5k of the 42.2k journey, but as she passed the 40km point was just a minute behind the leader, and with the last section winding through the city centre streets supported by the Italian crowd entered the finish outside the Arena Di Verona in an outstanding time and position.
Ryde Harriers Coach, Geoff Watkin has said:
“Carly only started running during the COVID-19 lockdown, and to produce a performance of this standard has been down to her dedication and hard work. Since London in April she has trained covering up to 80 miles a week undertaking tough marathon sessions on the track and on the road. It is a well-deserved performance, and I’m confident that she will continue to improve in the coming races.”
