Nearly 140 people enjoyed a day on the water as the Royal Victoria Yacht Club hosted its annual Open Day for People with Disabilities, with almost 200 boat trips taking place in glorious weather.
The event, held on 18th July, saw guests treated to trips around Wootton Creek and into the Solent, alongside a barbecue lunch, live entertainment and afternoon tea.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club has hosted the event every year since 1981, when it was first launched during the International Year of Disabled Persons.
A total of 193 boat trips were enjoyed throughout the day, with guests able to experience everything from fast motor boats to more leisurely cruises aboard the club’s launch, Victoria.
Wheelchair users were able to take to the water aboard specially adapted vessels Wet Wheels and Spirit of Scott Bader, while Cowes Sailability’s La Lunga and the trimaran Mad Hatter also proved popular. Members’ boats Jumper, Vamos, Willis and Vikla IV were also on hand to provide memorable experiences.
Guests included representatives from Sight for Wight, Mountbatten, Hazelwood House, Parkinson’s groups, Southern Housing, as well as individuals, their families and carers.
Carole, a volunteer with Mountbatten said:
“Events like this are so important to our young adults.
“As they help to create special memories of happy and fun times with their family and friends.”
Among those attending the event were the Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Susie Sheldon, High Sheriff Nigel Hartley, Fishbourne ward councillor Ian Dore and Fishbourne Parish councillor Cheryl Fontana, who spent time meeting guests, carers and volunteers.
More than 70 Royal Victoria Yacht Club members volunteered to help run the day.
Event coordinator Steve Sheridan said:
“This event simply couldn’t happen without the wonderful support of RVYC members, who give their time (and boats) so generously.
“The tombola raised over £500!”
A barbecue lunch and refreshments were provided by Medina Foods, while Grace’s Bakery and club members supplied homemade cakes.
Entertainment throughout the day came from Brian Thomas and Amanda, The Watch and the Wight Ukers, with Steve Love organising the musicians, who all performed free of charge.
The event was also supported by Fishbourne Parish Council, the Daisie Rich Trust, Medina Foods, Grace’s Bakery and Wightlink.
The next Royal Victoria Yacht Club Open Day for People with Disabilities is scheduled to take place on 17th July 2027.
