Members of the public are once again being urged to stay clear of the cliffs between Shanklin and Luccombe following another cliff fall this evening (Saturday).
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor are currently on scene at Shanklin Esplanade as falling debris from the crumbling cliffs poses a risk to walkers in the area.
The stretch of coast has seen a number of cliff falls in recent weeks – and each time members of the public have had to be ushered away from the area for their own safety.
Islanders should avoid the base of cliffs across the Island, particularly at Shanklin where there is significant risk of injury or being cut off by the tide.
Duty controller for HM Coastguard, Rob Priestley said:
“This is a serious rock fall and we’re strongly advising people to keep away from the area for at least the rest of the weekend.
“We know that some people use it for their local exercise but we would advise everyone to find another walk rather than risk walking into further rock falls”.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Was it you
walkers in the area
isn’t there a lockdown in place
There’s a lockdown in place, yes.
Not a curfew
Not martial law
So in lockdown you’ve not left your house once ? You’re allowed out to exercise ,don’t stay in and only exercise your wrist
All thats needed is common sense, stay away from dangerous places…
Yes, it’s a Lockdown not a Curfew, but it is NOT the first time that a fall has occurred in this area (or for that matter further along the revetment).
By all means enjoy your walk/exercise, just don’t be foolish as to where you walk.
It’s been in the media often enough about this area and cliff falls in general, mind you, you just can’t tell/help some people – they always know better.
They don’t know any ‘better’ Frank, they are just plain (as Judge Rinder on the TV says) STUPID!
