Efforts are ongoing to bring Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak to the Conservative stronghold of the Isle of Wight as they vie for the position of Prime Minister.
In a letter sent out widely by the Isle of Wight Conservative Association on Sunday, and seen by Island Echo yesterday (Monday), members of the Conservative Party were informed of the ongoing discussions to ensure the leadership contenders visit the Island – much like Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt did in 2019.
The 2019 hustings were a great success so it is hoped that a similar event can be held this time around. However, there is a possibility that both candidates won’t be able to make it to the Island on the same day.
It’s unclear how the Island’s Conservative members will vote, with local favourite Penny Mordaunt out of the running for PM – much to the disappointment of Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely who had announced his support for the Portsmouth North MP.
Bob Seely is now supporting Liz Truss.
Currently, the nearest hustings events are due to be held in Eastbourne on Friday 5th August and London on Wednesday 31st August.
The new leader of the Conservatives – and therefore the new leader of the country – will be revealed on 5th September.

‘Leaders’ indeed ? as opposed to say…WEF’s latest sock puppets locked and loaded for the next phase of the ‘Great work of the Ages’.
Hope they do NOT. More intelligence in a kinder garten
So we have a choice between an ex chancellor from a failed government who doesn’t like paying his taxes and a Maggie Thatcher wannabe. Ummmm”…..
Akin to having Tressa May as PM when she voted to stay in Brexit, and ‘expecting’ her to still do a decent job of negotiation, sadly I see the same happening with Sunak over immigration.
People seem to not understand that allowing millions of new people into the UK indirectly effects the over building on the Island and other low immigration areas, as many indigenous people then move here to escape areas they know longer feel at home in.
As we have min wage now, can’t use ‘cheap imported labour’ as an excuse either, and by the time a house, NHS, education, c.tax if provided for free, works out dearer than employing our own people
And Johnson’s hard Brexit has totally solved the illegal migrant problem, hasn’t it?
All Brexit has delivered is more grief for the “indigenous people” while doing little to prevent illegal migration.
What it has done is create a labour shortage that will now have to be filled from overseas. Except it won’t be fulfilled by good White Christian Eastern Europeans, it will be fulfilled by the people you really hate.
As for “employing our own people”? These would be the young British people you and your fellow gammons are constantly denigrating, would they?
You voted for an own-goal. Get over it.
Bit harsh, “people you really hate”, but I agree with everything else. The thing about Liz Truss is she has the toughness of Lady Thatcher and the gaffs of Boris Johnson, which makes her a perfect PM. As for visiting your island, as a former Conservative member, I am envious. David Cameron spoke at our local school when he was campaigning for the leadership, which I saw from outside, but the Isle of Wight is truly blessed. First Princess Anne, now maybe Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
Can’t have a brown person as PM, eh?
What is truly hilarious are the Daily Express loons cheering on the daughter of a migrant (Patel) whose own parents would be considered illegal under her current rules.
‘Conservative stronghold’, way things are going maybe the tide is turning against the Tory’s on the island.
dont bother.not welcome ta

Leader of the Country ? The electorate never voted for this person whomever it may be. If a Prime Minister resigns (even only as head of the party) then a general election must surely be called because that is a vote of no confidence in the government even by his or her own members. Therefore the house must request to Her Majesty that a new Government be formed. This is a major flaw in our system that there is no accountability for failing the people of his country.
It is completely broken.
Even the Tory membership are restricted to an awful choice as the MPs have already removed the (slightly) more credible candidates.

Sunak or Truss? It’s like choosing a toilet on day 3 of a music festival.
A couple of plebs want to come here. Whoopy dooo. Where’s the news?
What party would you vote in : Tory, Labour , Liberal, Green ? Unfortunately all are lying bastards . They don’t give a flying f**k about you. All meet at the end of the day in Parliament and laugh and joke whilst consuming copious amounts of alcohol subsidised by you the taxpayer. What we need is another Oliver Cromwell to shut down this nest of vipers and totally overhaul the pile of sh*t in Parliament including the House of Lords (expensive care home)
Why don’t they like me? What have I done to them?
Please research Cromwell before you hail him as the saviour of England.
Where in my post did I say he was a saviour? Cromwell dissolved Parliament in January 1665 because of issues that they were ignoring. Are you happy with this government ? One of the 5 A-levels I achieved was History. I am also stating the high level of dissatisfaction I come across. Oh just a little bit of news today was 2 of the energy giants have just published their profits Guess what – 1 was approx 11 billion pounds and the other was a billion pounds. I kid you not. Happy with that ? Especially with the forecast of huge energy price rises coming our way. Have nice day.
Welcome more toffs, head to bembridge, they like their own voices too
Get lost the pair of you!!!
