Police, HM Coastguard and Ryde Inshore Rescue are all involved in an ongoing incident at Ryde Esplanade this afternoon (Saturday), where a male is evading Police by wading through the sea.
Emergency teams have taken up position at the dry end of Ryde Pier where the individual – who is thought to be drunk and making threats – is walking from East to West under the pier structure whilst waist deep in water.
Both Police and Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge and Ventnor are located in the immediate area, with Ryde Rescue 2 lifeboat stood off.
Negotiations are expected to get underway shortly to bring a peaceful conclusion to the incident, but as it stands the male is not cooperating with Police.
UPDATE @ 14:57 – The male – carrying a carrier bag of alcohol and wearing fishing waders – has been successfully removed from the water and arrested by Police.
The incident concluded when the male walked east across the bottom of the hovercraft slipway and clambered onto rocks at Quay Road car park, finally making his way to the shore. Police then took their chance and snuck up on the individual, pulling him backwards out of the water – supported by HM Coastguard.
Emergency teams have now stood down from the incident.
UPDATE @ 15:48 – Police have confirmed that a 41-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested by officers and taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that officers attended Ryde Pier this afternoon in relation to a man they wanted to speak to about a domestic incident which had been reported a short time before. The man then entered the water.
The 41-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of using violence to secure entry to a premises.

Gosh not a good day to be wading in the cold sea .
Police HM coastguard and inshore rescue for some pratt waiding through water waist deep ?
Cheap at half the price. No coastguard helicopter involved. Fire engines from Sandown, Ryde and Newport stayed at their bases. All in all a cheap do.
No fire engines??
Who is this moron? jumping in the sea to evade capture pmsl…
Bloody leave him in there stupid git, wasting everyone’s time. I am losing all my sense of compassion with these drunken idiots.
Tbf he did try and gain entry using violence in a domestic incident he should be locked up so many women fall at the hands of weak men it’s truly disgusting, and of course Yet another person who uses alcohol to abdicate responsibility. My compassion went for them when my father abused me and was a drinker…
What a costly waste of Police and rescue services time. He should be charged the TRUE cost of this and hit with a serious fine and suspended sentence.
To be fare, he did not asked to be rescued and did not need to be rescued.
The police should have just let him be,
and if necessary, arrested him tomorrow.
To many busy bodies on this island imo.
# Fathers for justice.
And yet another stupid comment by the TROLL.
Just because i dare to disagree with some of you, it don’t make me a troll !
Back to school on Monday…….?
The Police have a duty of care to those they deal with and this is covered by legislation. In any case Police officers are caring people and would not leave this man at risk in the sea in winter .
He could have died in the cold water.
Taser him in the water, that’d teach him
Evil person
WELL SAID BUDDY, Their for the grace of god go i.
Brilliant!
WHY……? You sound easily pleased.
I sometimes have to pinch myself, to the thought that i may have been in contact with some of you plums today.
Shower time…..imo. me not you…..( soz, this sounds well gay ) lol.
Something fishy about this idiot….
Should have bloody left him in the sea. He wouldn’t hang about in there for too long. Too cold.
Cruel horrible person
Every day a new low life smack/swill/snort on free handouts being allowed to poison the surroundings of decent hard working people. They should all be tagged and their feral brats put on curfews. It’s about time our streets were cleared of this burden.
He is NOT a lowlife how dare you
Should not be so mental then.Waste of tax payers money.
Calm down snowflake.
I suggest when you see your friend to advise him not to reach for alcohol but to contact you, there is help, even call the Samaritans, always a way forward out of a mental health problem.
3 strikes and you’re out, that’s a better solution.
None of you know anything about what this poor man has experienced.I do. Quit with the cruel lynchmob mentality.
Have any of you had any luck with help from mental health services? No. You won’t even admit to depression. And you certainly won’t get help with it. The state of the NHS is dire. You can’t get a repeat prescription for genuine problems, or a doctors appointment for love nor money.
I can’t believe how insensitive and cruel the posters have been so far.
HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR SOMEONE IN DISTRESS and be grateful you don’t understand it. Yet I hpe he actually gets the help he has asked for repatedly. Social services have also utterly failed him with incompetence and lack of compassion too
No we don’t but we are not interested either – do gooders like you need to wake up and realise where all your tax money goes! Social
Services haven’t failed him – he’s a drunk that’s all and a waste of air.
Much respect for your comment and sharing your ACTUAL knowledge of this man and the unfortunate situation that happened. Unfortunately your words are mostly lost on the predominant lynch mob that infests this site.
I truly hope he will now be allowed to have access to the relevant help he has been desperate to get up to now and gets on the road to recovery before it’s too late for him.
To all the judgemental pack of wolves who have posted negative comments on this man- Back off in future with your nasty comments until you know all facts. Your comments show more about yourselves than the person you are targeting.
Well said.
These idiots on here having a go have no idea about the mess our mental health system is in.
Its at crisis point and these judgmental twats make things worse for people already struggling.
Totally agree I have been at the hands of the police several times since july and in hospital for overdosing due to no support from mental health and it took my last od to finally get some help all these 24/7 help lines that close at 7pm is wrong no help out there I’m now training to be a councillor
Very well put, the lack of empathy isn’t surprising from these little people who enjoy their cheap shots. Small things pleases small minds!. You don’t go into the sea this time of year with booze etc without some sort of mental anguish, a cry for help?. Whatever it is with him and many others that they have the courage firstly ask for help and a better system to get it. Social services isn’t fit for purpose, they read their script, tick boxes and that’s it, pathetic.
You obviously know this man. If he has issues then he deserves help. In the post by IE it states this man has used ‘violence’ to gain entry into a property many times. Using violence will not help this chaps cause whatsoever, neither will drinking alcohol and getting drunk. Hopefully he will get the help he needs to he can get himself sorted.
I hear what you say but i think the keyboard warriors view appears to be that getting drunk (or looking to get drunk) and creating a scene involving vast expense to public services is not really the best way to get your needs met. Perhaps the Samaritans, 111, safe haven in Ryde or Newport may be a bit more sensible.
So using violence to obtain entry putting fear into those inside is okay with you then is it, take a day off will you.
I spoke with someone who was there…
the bloke was drunk and when he was in the water by the rocks near the sea wall of the ice rink he stopped, looked around for the police and when he realised he couldn’t see them, he did everything he could to make matters worse to attract attention.
the person watched him stand in the water, swilling booze with a carrier bag in his hand, waving at the Hovercraft as it departed. it was pointed out that the Hovercraft staff had an ambulance at the terminal and were putting a patient on a stretcher onto the Hovercraft. This drunken imbecile wandered onto the Hovercraft pad and could have delayed the departure and risked that patients life.
no sympathy for this drunk
how about you show respect and compassion for the victims of the crimes he had committed – this drunken slob needs locking up – just another attention seeking loser that thinks the whole world revolves around him. How about he take some actual responsibility for himself, instead of expecting everyone else to cater to his needs, cradle to grave – fed up with these weak, pathetic individuals that are so needy that they have to have another human around, as they are so pathetic and useless.
bang the disgusting slob up and throw away the key.
Leave the drunk to drown
Mental health my left foot thanks for wasting people time
Far too many people always assume and won’t wait for all the facts. I don’t know anything about this but maybe some of you should look at yourself before judging others
