Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat have responded to reports of a surfer in difficulty at Sandown this afternoon (Friday).
HM Coastguard tasked the search and rescue assets at 14:43 following a call from a concerned fisherman.
Thankfully, the surfer managed to make it back to shore unaided ahead of the arrival of emergency services.
The incident has been deemed false alarm with good intent but the caller who dialled 999 has been praised for doing exactly the right thing by raising their concerns to HM Coastguard.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
