UPDATED: Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 175, Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team are all attending an incident off the coast of the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Saturday).

Emergency teams were scrambled to an area around half a mile or so off the coast, near to Brighstone and Brook, at around 13:30.

The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team have taken up position on the cliff tops at Brook Cottages.

UPDATE @ 14:54 – A yacht, thought to be at the centre of this afternoon’s alert, is now under tow by Yarmouth RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat. Freshwater Independent Lifeboat’s inshore D-class lifeboat is following the tow at a safe distance.

In the skies, Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent has stood down and returned to base.

Island Echo has approached the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) for further information.

UPDATE @ 17:30 – It has been confirmed that the casualty yacht reported to Solent Coastguard that it was taking on water, prompting the emergency response.

The yacht has been towed to the safety of Yarmouth Harbour without incident.
