Red Funnel’s vehicle ferry service has been suspended until further notice amid an ongoing Police incident outside the Southampton terminal this morning (Friday).
Island Echo understands that the exit to the terminal, onto Town Quay, is currently blocked because of an incident that occurred at around 11:00.
Resources from the South Central Ambulance Service, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are on scene.
As a result of the incident, vehicles are unable to leave the terminal, meaning service has been suspended. Red Jet services are not affected.
UPDATE @ 11:35 – Police have confirmed that the collision involves a lorry and a pedestrian.
Such is the nature of the incident that a road closure is in place between Mayflower Roundabout and Town Quay.
Vehicles travelling on the 10:30 from East Cowes, which has just arrived in Southampton, are using the secondary terminal exit onto Town Quay.
UPDATE @ 12:10 – The involved lorry, belonging to Medina Foodservice, had disembarked from the 09:30 from East Cowes just moments before the collision occurred, Island Echo understands.
Red Funnel has confirmed that service has resumed, but only for foot passengers, cars and small vans only.
Customers should anticipate continued disruption throughout the day.
UPDATE @ 13:38 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a man in his 60s has sustained life-threatening injuries, with a woman in her 60s escaping with minor injuries.
The driver of the lorry, a 69-year-old man, has been arrested.
