Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight ferry operator, has announced a new partnership with Newport-based technology provider WRS, marking a significant step in enhancing the onboard customer experience across its vehicle ferry fleet.
As part of the partnership, Red Funnel has rolled out advanced electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) systems in all ReFuel cafés onboard its ferries. This upgrade is designed to improve transaction speed, streamline service, and create a more seamless experience for customers.
ReFuel cafés are a beloved feature of Red Funnel’s onboard offerings, providing passengers with high-quality food and beverages during their crossing. The cafés offer a variety of options, including hot food and drinks, cakes, pastries, and other refreshments, many of which are sourced locally from suppliers such as The Island Tea & Coffee Co. and Island Foods.
Announcing the partnership, Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel said:
“We’re delighted to be working with WRS to improve service in our ReFuel cafés. The new payment systems are increasing the speed and efficiency of service, helping us deliver a quicker, more seamless experience for every customer. We are continuously exploring new ways to partner with Island businesses and support the local economy, and our latest collaboration with WRS strengthens our community ties whilst enhancing our service across the Solent.”
Jamie White, Head of Business Development at WRS, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership:
“WRS is proud to be the trusted POS provider for Red Funnel, which provides one of the key gateways to and from the Isle of Wight. We are excited to be providing seamless and efficient solutions to support and enhance the ferry company’s operations. Well done to everyone involved in the project!”
Looking ahead, Red Funnel plans to further enhance its ReFuel cafés by enhancing its range of locally sourced products and broadening menu options to cater to diverse dietary preferences. The company is also exploring additional sustainability initiatives, including reducing single-use plastics and adopting more eco-conscious packaging.
The new EPOS systems are now live, and Red Funnel remains committed to delivering exceptional service to its passengers with the support of innovative local partners like WRS.

A more reliable service is a better idea.
All of this is a fat lot of good if the ferry doesn’t run. Red Funnel needs to get a grip on its cancellation rate before worrying about on board gimmicks
