Planned works on a railway bridge in Sandown will see a lane closed overnight for 4 nights next week, with temporary traffic lights in place to manage traffic flow.
Network Rail will be carrying out improvement works on Sandown Girder Bridge at the junction between Perowne Way, Morton Common and Avenue Road from Monday (7th July) until Thursday (10th July).
The works, which will include the installation of steelwork and painting of the handrail, will be carried out overnight between 23:00 and 05:00 each night. An access tower, drills, power tools and lighting will be used on site, which may result in some noise and light disturbance.
Rather than a full road closure as previously reported, there will now be a lane and footpath closure with temporary traffic lights controlling the flow of vehicles. Pedestrians will still be able to pass through the area via a designated walkway.
Anyone with any questions or concerns about the works can call Network Rail’s 24-hour helpline on 03457 11 41 41, quoting “Sandown Bridge”, or visit www.networkrail.co.uk for more information.
Back in September 2024 the road was closed for 8 weeks so that Network Rail could replace one of the 2 bridges above the carriageway. Then in March, the road was closed for a further 4 weeks.

Are they taking the p…? All these road closures it’s ridiculous, do the work in one go! The tourists dont have to put up with road closures only us who live here?
They don’t care who they annoy.
Bridge work is between Monday 7th July and Friday 11th July.
The road will be closed every night between the hours of 23:00 and 05:00 each night.
Bridge work between.
I can’t see who that is going to hurt.
This will not affect many people at all, especially the people who have commented on this post already. The diversions will be uncluttered with traffic also. Suck it up!!
