Police lampPolice are this week investigating reports of a doorstep crime in Newport, where it is believed an elderly man had cash stolen from him.

At around 14:00 last Friday (27th March), an 85 year-old man answered his front door in the Hinton Road/Wellington Road area of Carisbrooke to a man with a parcel.

The now-wanted man claimed to be delivering an unexpected parcel and said there was insufficient postage, prompting the homeowner to pay the balance. The victim became suspicious and refused to take the parcel, but believes cash may have been taken from his wallet while he was distracted.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:

“We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you to check the credentials of cold callers to your home and contact the company concerned if you have any doubts. You can also call us on 101”.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to call 101 quoting ref 44150103749.
