UPDATED: The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter is circling in the skies above Freshwater this afternoon (Saturday) due to an ongoing incident in the town.
Police are present in the area in significant numbers and are understood to have surrounded a residential property on Tennyson Road.
Initial reports suggest a person has taken up position on a roof. The road has been closed as a result.
In the past half an hour the Police helicopter from Bournemouth has made its presence known and is hovering over the scene, providing assistance to ground units.
UPDATE @ 12:54 – Island Echo understands that a male has taken to the roof of the property at the centre of this afternoon’s Police incident.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are now also on scene to assist Hampshire Constabulary, however the NPAS helicopter has departed the area.
It remains unclear at this stage why the individual has taken up position on the rooftop.
UPDATE @ 13:53 – The aerial ladder appliance from Newport Fire Station is en-route to the West Wight to assist colleagues from Freshwater and Police with the ongoing situation.
UPDATE @ 14:37 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the male is wanted for failing to appear before court.
Island Echo understands the local man was due to appear yesterday (Friday).
UPDATE @ 19:58 – After more than 7 hours on the rooftop, the wanted male has peacefully ended the stand-off and is now in the custody of Police.
The incident has been brought to a close and Tennyson Road has now re-opened.
