The National Police Air Service Helicopter (NPAS) from Bournemouth is assisting with a pursuit of a vehicle on the Isle of Wight tonight (Friday).
The chase of a silver hatchback is believed to have begun in Cowes and proceeded towards Newport, then Wootton and Binstead.
Eyewitnesses have said that the silver vehicle was being chased by 2 police vehicles past St Mary’s Hospital towards the dual carriageway at around 80 mph.
Attentions have now turned to the Wootton and Fishbourne area with the NPAS helicopter circling overhead.
Officers on the ground are searching the area.
UPDATE @ 21:50 – The helicopter is now returning to base at Bournemouth.
It is thought that the vehicle has evaded Police.
Ground units are still in the area but appear to be standing down.
UPDATE SATURDAY – Police have confirmed that a silver VW Golf made off from officers after the driver failed to stop on Medina Way, Newport at just before 20:26 last night.
The pursuit ended in the Wootton area but unfortunately the vehicle nor its driver were located.
Officers are continuing their investigations to track the vehicle down.

More waste of time, for IF they stop it, the driver will get a silly fine which social security (we) will pay, and a ban on a license which it likely doesn’t hold anyway, and can’t scrap the car as it likely stolen.
They need to drive a huge lorry straight into it and we can see a pile of flowers at the site from chav mates.
Probably delivering drugs or drunk lol
Just read on here about another of this ‘ilk’ who killed a father of four, whilst driving full of drugs AND has just been done for the same offence, and has been banned 6 times.
They AGAIN gave a weak 18m ban.
Imagine if that was your Dad who was killed by rubbish like this.
They need taking out, as the only reason they don’t always kill, is luck.
We can no longer rely of courts to do the right thing, as our jails are now filled with even worse from else where so they can’t jail them for long, even IF they wished too.
More stinking drug driving by the dirty Chav’s, I agree, big truck method would work..
So what your saying is to murder them.wtf is wrong with you islanders?
No, not murder them but a bit of vigilante justice wouldn’t go amiss. Knee capping, tar and feathering that sort of thing.
ha ha i agree
I have a telescope and a truck if that helps
Steralise the under classes. Then slowly they will disappear.
Could sterilise the bad spellers too. Boil them in oil for five minutes?
Do you not mean fry
What about the rich twats that drive badly and should not be behind the wheel? Like, say, the Duke of Edinburgh? Nearly kills a woman and her friend, two days later out driving again. Showing no remorse.
Hope they capture him before he hurts somebody or a wild animal out in the dark.
What happened to Boris’s advice STAY HOME
Obviously they don’t watch the Briefings
Didn’t you know they don’t watch the news so they don’t know about the virus and the rules !
How can they lose it especially when the helicopter is above
The police are as much use as a chocolate teapot. And yet the police precept on our council tax bills goes up and up every year while their performance goes down and down, I suppose someone has to find the money for chief constable Olivia Pinkney’s £200,000 annual salary…
not to mention the obscene salary paid to Mr Lane, plus his “support” costs.
It’s about time the island echo turned off the comment section permanently!!!!!
Executioner, why don’t YOU make a unilateral stand, and not read or post here, IF ‘freedom of views’ of others bothers you so?
They should be trained to carry out such task. How come a so dangerous driver can escape from the police, assisted by a helicop, on a small island?
Because the police got fed up with being sued and prosecuted when the person they were chasing kills someone. So now all you have to do to loose the police is drive dangerously and the police back off and let them go. Get get what you sow.
so 2 cars a helicopter on a small island and he got away. ok
Well done to the police, another great job, and the council want us to give them more money! What a joke…
Publish the car number, they must have at least got that,
Why aren’t island police allowed to use stinger or viper?
They would probably prick their own fingers on a stinger and sue their employers for a workplace accident!
Ha ha !! Probably put it upside down…. lol
Sadly the other two Island police with cars, were on tea break in Ryde Police station… as unknown why they could not have radio’d ahead… maybe had the Wootton crossroads at Cedars blocked off.. ?? Or maybe it was just a Police set up stunt… what was wrong with Lee on Solent helicopters.. why Bournemouth, waste of fuel…
But if real, and when driver is caught, if not prison then a 10 year driving ban and fines £1000.00 upwards.. or all three..
As soon as there is a ‘failure to stop’ the police should start totting up the costs, then when the perpetrators are caught, make them pay up! Helicopters come expensive – very!
Lee on Solent is Coastguard, not Police.
Damn, they did not say how long it took the driver !! probably trying to beat my record, from umpteen years ago when there were not so many people and cars around ( wagons and horses..) lol
Why don’t they just ram them like they do in the states
And they ram motorbikes too.
Possibly do not know how to safely..
What I don’t get is this. With all the high-speed driving/braking, their front wheels must have lit up like a Xmas tree on infrared from the helicopter. How come they lost it? Also, If they were being chased by one of their Ford Mondeos, it would be hard to keep up.
The clapped out golf with a big exhaust overtook me at medina and the 2 brand new BMW couldn’t catch it? The golf couldn’t get over 70mph! I can’t believe they got away! I could have easily caught the golf
If cars were more expensive to run then poor people wouldn’t be clogging up our roads being a nuisance and getting in the way of those of us that have earned the right to be there…
Blithering idiot, doesn’t he know its 88mph ffs.
Drug runners????
