Police have cordoned off an area beside the car park at Yaverland in Sandown this afternoon (Friday) following the discovery of what is thought to be an unexploded piece of ordnance.
Officers arrived at the seaside location at around 13:00 when a member of the public reported finding a hand grenade.
The object has been moved to the middle of a grassed area and marked with cones whilst Police await the arrival of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth, who have been sent photos of the suspected hand grenade.
If their attendance is required, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts will either take the device away or detonate it on the beach at Yaverland later on this afternoon.
Put it in their bag for later. Laugh.
If it hasn’t exploded in 70 ish years, with rain, salt, sea, and being battered against rocks, it is unlikely to now imo.
Just lob it off the ferry and save our taxes imo.
There is always such great ‘drama’ now with such, in France they plough them up daily, and stack them in heaps and much larger explosives than a grenade.
No wonder our taxes are high.
EOD guys get paid if they’re sat in the office or out on the ground so not really costing any extra. They just get a day out the office which they will probably appreciate. May as well dispose of properly rather then let it turn up again and be at square 1.
