The Island Savoyards have unveiled a brass plaque in the foyer of Shanklin Theatre denoting the company’s close association with the theatre over the past 50 years.
The plaque, donated by Sheelah Stephens, founder member and secretary of the Savoyards since 1971, said she wished to acknowledge the achievement and success of everyone involved in the company and to also acknowledge the role the theatre has played in that success over the half-century.
The plaque depicts a reference to Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, the very first operetta staged at the theatre by the Savoyards. From that operetta includes the message “may all good fortune prosper you, may you have health and riches too, may you succeed in all you do”.
Both the company and the theatre look forward to many more years of working together.
The plaque was officially presented to theatre manager Vic Farrow after the company’s performance of Guys and Dolls last Friday (28th October).
In addition, the Island Savoyards were delighted to bestow honorary memberships to 3 people who have shown steadfast and invaluable support to the company over the years. The recipients are John Hammond, Chris Gardner and Rebecca Gardner.
