A pillar that has stood at the entrance to the former Standard Hotel in Freshwater for over 100 years has been destroyed by a van this morning (Friday).
The Renault panel van is understood to have rolled into the concrete structure shortly before 09:30.
Luckily, the van avoided hitting the other pillar – otherwise, the structural integrity of the porchway’s concrete roof could have been compromised.
The building on School Green Road, near to Sainsbury’s, was once home to the Standard Hotel, known as the Royal Standard. It was also a Burt’s public house but nowadays is a 7-bedroom holiday let.

The driver will be pilloried for that!
A visit to Specsavers for the van driver may be a good idea, or a re-test.
Rolled into the pillar ????
Handbrake and in gear !!!!!
More idiot van drivers will be along soon, they are a pain in the ass…
Jo. Genuine question. How do you get deliveries? I’m thinking supermarkets, Amazon, post office etc.
Or do you collect everything direct from the supplier?
Thats okay then, just carryon crashing into buildings, not forgetting all the crashing on our roads…..
Joe you strange women’s please have a bath
Plenty of awful van drivers about. Saw a Coop van driving up the road with its back doors wide open and swinging about earlier.
Could of made the porch collapse easily , probably should of done on top the van
