UPDATED: The Downs Road has been closed by Police as a result of a serious road traffic collision, which the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are also attending this evening (Monday).
Firefighters from Shanklin and Newport are on scene near Knighton Shute where a vehicle has left the road, trapping at least 1 person.
2 ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, an ambulance officer, 2 fire engines and a number of Police officers are all in attendance having been alerted at just before 18:20.
The road is closed between Lime Kiln Shute and Knighton Shute. Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 19:05 – Island Echo understands that a motorcycle has been involved in the incident, which was possibly carrying a pillion passenger at the time of impact.
1 Ambulance has already left the scene on blues light, making speed to St Mary’s Hospital. A second ambulance remains on scene.
Police have begun an initial investigation into the circumstances of the crash and are awaiting a condition update from doctors. It is unclear at this stage if any other vehicles have been involved.
The road remains closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 19:30 – The Downs Road has now re-opened in both directions as the injuries are not as serious as first feared.
It has been confirmed that a motorcyclist and pillion passenger have both been taken to hospital.
A car has also been involved in the incident, but none of its occupants have required hospital treatment.
