Over £3,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to support promising young footballer Cian McGee, who fractured his spine in a serious car accident on Friday 22nd of November.
Cian – who plays for Oakfield FC and has previously appeared for Binstead & COB and Ryde Saints – is self-employed. His injury means he will not be working or earning income for the foreseeable future.
The GoFundMe is intended to help support his family pay bills over the Christmas period and help put Cian on the road to recovery by paying for his physiotherapy.
Former teammate Tom Grandvoinet – who organised the GoFundMe page – described the accident as follows:
“Cian Mcgee was involved a very serious single car accident after a car on the other side of the road tried overtaking without due care attention on a blind corner, leading Cian to decide between a head on collision and swerving into trees.
“There were police and ambulance services on the scene thankfully, recovering him from the vehicle; however, he sustained very serious injuries, meaning he was airlifted to Southampton hospital that night.
“Cian later found out he had suffered a fractured lumbar spine and punctured intestine that required emergency surgery.
“Cian is now awaiting news on whether his spine has to be operated on with a long road to recovery.”
Tom explained his reasons for setting up the GoFundMe page for Cian:
“I have made this GoFundMe as Cian is self-employed in the trade; so without work, he will not be receiving any income for the foreseeable future. To support him and his family, any financial aid would go a long way.
“It would make such a difference to his recovery and mental state knowing so many are there to help him out in a tough time for his family. Any donations to help him with recovery such as physio would be greatly appreciated.
“In addition to this, it could help him get some Christmas presents for his loved ones whilst he isn’t able to earn any income for an uncertain amount of time while having to deal with everyday costs such as bills in today’s unforgiving financial climate.
“Finally, any messages or personal support would go a long way to Cian, as it is so important to know people are in your corner within the local community.
“Get well soon Cian, we’re all here for you and can’t wait to see you back in action and giving endless laughter to your friends and family.”
Anyone wishing to donate to Cian to provide physiotherapy on his road to recovery and support his family in a difficult period can do so through the following GoFundMe page.
It is sad news, but what if everyone had an accident playing a
sport, sadly that is the gamble.
I have friends who have had skiing injuries, and they could
not work, that was the risk they took.
Self employed persons need to take out insurance to
cover such incidents.
