A man who allegedly knocked an 82-year-old unconscious after he was told to slow down on his motorcycle will face no further action, Police have confirmed.
It was back in April that an elderly gentleman was crossing over the road from School Lane to Cross Lane in Newport when a motorcycle approached at speed from the Coppins Bridge direction. The pensioner gestured for the motorcyclist to slow down, believing the vehicle was travelling at speeds in excess of 60mph in a 30mph zone.
At the time of the offence, it was alleged that the motorcyclist parked up and punched the 82-year-old in the face with such force that it knocked him unconscious.
The perpetrator fled the scene, leaving the injured gentleman on the pavement. The victim’s family say he was ‘left for dead’.
Just hours after issuing an appeal for information, Police arrested a 42-year-old man from Newport on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
But now, some 3 months after the incident, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said that no further action will be taken in relation to the arrested male.
A Police spokesperson has said:
“Both parties have been updated. However, as ever, should further new information come to light regarding this matter, then officers will make further enquiries.”

Scumbag beating up elderly men and gets no further action. Police and courts should be ashamed of themselves
No surprise there. Our family has had recent first hand experience of this kind of thing, when an 11 year old child was physically assaulted, sustaining injuries, by a man in his 30s, who, after the whole incident was captured on the police station cctv, and making a full confession, was handed a conditional caution. Reason for the assault? Mistaken identity.
He should be charged with it because he left a old man for dead how would he like it if it was a member of his family there is no justice on this island anymore.
It would appear these days that if the accused sent a hurty email instead of physically knocking the old guy out, he would have got a prison sentence.
ALLEGEDLY.
Allegedly assaulted him, allegedly speeding.
In other words, there was only the old man’s word for it. Until there is evidence to proceed……
Was the motor cyclist a ex copper
