Two firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have returned home from Lisbon having clinched a very respectable 2nd place trophy in an international trauma competition hosted by the World Rescue Organisation.
Crew Manager Aidy Wellock of Newport Fire Station and Firefighter Aden Thomson of Ryde Fire Station competed in the international competition representing the UK Fire and Rescue Service, gaining 2nd place in the Best Trauma Award category.
The event is setup to improve technical rescue standards by bringing together rescue and medical services throughout the world to develop and share essential post incident skills and knowledge.
The Isle of Wight’s trauma team have competed both regionally and nationally in previous competitions, gaining vital skills that are then passed on through the service to improve firefighter’s hands on medical care at incidents. Through their hard work and placement in the national competitions, Aidy and Aden were selected to join teams from across the globe competing in the world rescue challenge.
Throughout their time in Lisbon, the firefighters were given a series of first-person-on-scene incidents where they used their skills and training to triage, stabilise and employ lifesaving essentials to the simulated casualties whilst being assessed by professional medical experts.
The event included training sessions and educational workshops hosted by medical professionals from across the world, delivering, upskilling and coaching the entrants to ensure fire and rescue personnel are working at the Gold standard.
