Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council has reported an increase in vandalism in the town’s public toilets, which is resulting in the closure of much-needed facilities.
Recent incidents include toilets being deliberately blocked, fires, electrical fittings damaged, graffiti, toilet seats removed and toilet paper dispensers kicked from the wall.
The damage will sometimes lead to the closure of the facilities to allow repairs to take place, much to the disgruntlement of shoppers.
Councillor Matthew Price, Chair of the Assets & Facilities Committee of Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council, has said:
“We have tried our best to keep the public toilets open for as many hours as possible and at a great cost to local residents, it is so sad that a small minority think it is acceptable to vandalise the toilets.
“Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council took the toilets on after the Isle of Wight Council made the decision to close all the public toilets back in 2013 and NCCC has worked hard to move forward with projects to upgrade them.
“The vandalism we are currently seeing cannot continue and we are pleading with the individuals to stop and think how unacceptable this behaviour is.”
Cllr Price adds:
“Your Community Council will continue to do everything we can to keep the toilets open but hope that residents and visitors can understand when the toilets need to be closed due to the damage sustained.”
Police have been informed of the incidents and are checking the facilities as part of their town patrols.
Think vandals think young feral trash, a sad sign of our times that these trash have no respect for anyone or anything in their retarded minds they think this is being clever.
In the unlikely event of them being caught they should be made to pay the whole cost of any repairs and if they cannot pay then their parents should be forced to pay instead as they bred them but either cannot or will not control them and teach them respect.
If they were my kid’s they would be made to clean the loo’s on their hands and knees and not see any sunlight for day’s!!

Police are checking as part of town patrols! – once a month then around lunch time. As said before when individuals are caught get them to clean the mess not only at the loos they damage, but across Island. No deterant at moment.
All public toilets should be as basic as possible to keep damage risk low.
NO seats should be fitted at all, stainless steel pans, hidden high levels cisterns used to max flow of water to lessen blockages and NO toilet paper provided at all.
Then anyone using public toilets would be aware they had to buy or take their own paper, cutting costs for council tax payers, and preventing vandals from pulling out reams of paper and setting it alight or blocking the toilet with such.
Walls rough rendered, no tiles, then no grafitti or weirdo’s numbers easily written on such.
Now we have to allow for the lowest trash in society
No paper is a ridiculous idea, like anyone would take toilet paper with them every time they go out. No. A better idea is just make them cost to use. Say 20p.
Hey Jobsy. I have to disagree with you. I suffer from IBS and am never quite sure when I’ll need a loo so ALWAYS have loo roll with me as public loos cannot be relied upon to have some. Vandalism of loos is just, excuse the pun, crap.

I was at Cowes week about 10 years ago, bursting to use a loo, went into a public one only to be confronted with a broken bottle sticking up out of the pan ! Would it have been funny if I had sat down? If yes, then you are sick and need help. Who in their right mind would do these things? No thoughts for others, no thoughts about costs of cleaning and repairing. Find the idiots, charge them and or their parent(s) then a restraining order against using public toilets.. !!
They don’t have the brains to see every time they do this it’s the public who pick up the cost on our council tax, when they catch these idiots they need to made to drink lots of fluids then sit them down and wait for the outcome and make them suffer by not letting them go then maybe they might think about elderly people who need a loo and can’t go because it’s been vandalised
Main problem is the lazy who messed about at school when they bothered attending, now discover by having a child it, or they will provide them with an income, a free house free council tax totally free health care for years
So many children born are not really wanted, only to gain the above. So the unloved offspring are bitter, vile and care for no one
Long term answer is to end all benefit if you have children, then only wanted ones would be born.
Governments thought it was lack of cash which made kids vile so gave families more and more but such has made it worse for reason above

The state this country is in is entirely due to the PC and do gooder brigade who have made it impossible to control these trash, they offend because they know nothing will be done to them, forget all this “community orders” and slaps on the wrist and reinstate Borstals which are run with rigid discipline as was St Swithins, inmates there rarely returned for a second stay and parents should be held accountable for their behaviour by being made to pay for all damage done by their offspring.
The only way to stop this is make them pay to go loos. If people really need to go they’d be willing to pay 50p like you do in London etc. However, then they need to be checked regularly by someone & kept clean & papered. I know people will moan about paying, but years ago all toilets were pay to go. Hence the phrase ‘spend a penny’ but there wasn’t the trouble we have now with broken loos. Just a thought.
Agree100% Sharon. Toilets should be as basic as possible. Stainless steel, no paper and exposed fittings for these brainless kids to smash. Pay as you Go is the way to go. The Council need to get their heads around this problem and fast. It’s a holiday island with many visitors and there needs to be to toilet facilities available for visitors and residents alike. I’m sure people would not mind paying if it means they get to use a toilet. Better than no toilets.
Why not get these little darlings or their parents pay for things to put right. Old fashioned I know.
Identify who these idiots are then put them on a curfew. Or even better, serve them with a Police ‘thingy’ whatever it is, banning them from entering Town Centres. How bloody stupid. Is this really the way kids get their kicks nowadays? Do they think it’s funny to smash and set light to property. Seriously, their parents need to be held accountable for their out of control kids.
