A new service to provide year-round mental health crisis support to adults across the Isle of Wight has gone live in Ryde.
Ryde Safe Haven, located in the Town Hall on Lind Street, offers any over 18s on the Island a ‘safe space’ out of hours on Fridays, weekends and bank holidays.
It follows the success of Newport Safe Haven, which opened 3 years ago and has, in the past year, supported more than 650 people on the Island.
Working closely in partnership with the Island’s other NHS mental health services, the ‘safe havens’ provide a safe space for people experiencing a mental health crisis. Support from staff can be accessed by telephone, email or face to face during evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
The service is being run by experienced mental health partners Two Saints Ltd.
The Ryde service has been commissioned as a pilot until March 2023 by the Integrated Care Board for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Based in the Town Hall, the Safe Haven is open on Fridays from 17:00-21:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 13:00-21:00. It offers:
- a safe place to talk
- a review of crisis management
- reassurance
- support to stay at well within the community or at home
- signposting to other agencies
- confidential online self-guided mental health support through Mind District.
People do not need a referral to the service. They can just call, email or visit the safe havens in person where they will be able to talk to a mental health recovery worker. They may also be signposted to the service by their GP, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust or other partners.
Dr Daniel O’Neill, a GP at Ryde who leads on mental health services on the Island for the ICB, said:
“Data has shown that people from Ryde were frequently phoning or attending Newport Safe Haven, so the need is clear, as I know from my own work as a local GP.
“This new service offers increased opportunities for support to individuals in Ryde and the surrounding area for those who are experiencing poor mental health, and unfortunately that is a growing number of people.”
Laura Jordan, Contracts and Performance Manager for Two Saints, said:
“We are really pleased to have been asked to pilot this service in Ryde following a successful three years in Newport.
“At some stage in our lives, most of us experience poor mental health and when you reach the point of crisis, it can be a very scary and overwhelming place to be. The team at Safe Haven work really hard to always offer a safe place where they can listen, de-escalate in that moment of crisis, support with a plan so people stay safe and also signpost to other appropriate and meaningful services.
“We want the Isle of Wight community to know that there are people and places they can go to in these crisis moments”.

Why is there nothing like this for under 18yrs,all we hear in news is children’s mental health ,yet they only get a service by referral and put on waiting list !
Healthy parents and adults healthy kids
Does that mean :Parents that are not dependent on drugs or alcohol.. or being abusive to their children ?
More cost to a struggling health service to provide overpaid staff to deal with often, not always but very often self inflicted harm via drugs, alcohol or choosing a vile partner ‘thinking’ they would change them..
Yet the genuinely physically ill, often elderly are left in pain awaiting operations whilst attention seeking mob who have worn out their welcome from family and friends, oft for a good reason are top of the list to be ‘helped’.
That is what the charities are for such as Samaritan’s etc.
What an absolutely ridiculous arrogant thing to say!!!! Good mental health is vital for a healthy happy life. The Samaritans and nhs mental health services have been extremely over stretched for many years and not having the vital funding they need has taken its toll on those suffering! Mental health isn’t just caused by drugs, alcohol or abuse it’s caused by people like you that have no idea what their talking about! Society plays a huge part in mental health….maybe doing a bit of research yourself might help you to understand what people really go through, the triggers, what help isn’t there and what is. Don’t comment unless you know what your talking about!
Just don’t be miserable lol
Ignorant and Nasty is the word for people like you….more of you will be along soon…
Does make you wonder – though..
we have hospitals/gyms/clinics all over the place for physical health
we have life coaches offering services to assist with emotional health
we have sexual health clinics for sexual health
we have an array of financial services for financial health
however, mental health services are barely available anywhere and the support and creation of the sector to enable practitioners and clinics to get going by the government is non existent.
some would say that our society is weaker because of the need for mental health support – no, historically it was hidden, getting it into public view is strength
What we actually have if you drill into it is a dysfunctional symptoms service which has gone from corporate/pharma-profit-enabler to (still the case) a full-on weaponized against us arm of the Deep-State.Good work being done by surgeons and specialists obviously, but still hog-tied to the Rockefellers script which is source of all humanities woes and has been for over a century with their assault on natural medicine in favour of the petro-chemical ‘allopathic’ variants as to be expected from a satanic dynasty who monopolised big-oil in the early part of the century.
And others would say it is the ‘new’ bad back claim for the benefit scroungers.
Many avoided work by claiming bad backs, then medical testing came into play, so now, mental health, the symptoms of much such as anxiety can be easily researched and faked has now meant a swell of claims to max income on social estates so I hear.
Also, as said, drugs, drink and life choices make much mental health a self inflicted issue, so charity for such should pick up the pieces not our struggling NHS now imo.
Certainly if you are born mental or have an accident then all help available should be given.
Many ways of looking at issues I guess
Guess you haven’t been there.
If you need help one day, I hope you dont meet yourself on the other side of the desk.
Really, there has always been a need for services for mental health in ryde. In fact there was an extremely good one in ryde Ribelou. Offered fantastic support to many people. But 4 years ago good old council closed it down as apparently there was no need for it. So where have all those poor soles gone. Oh yer that’s right been out on a limb for years but it OK now you can go to safe haven. Only at weekends and evenings though. Great.
Honestly, if the Government would build a tunnel to the Island, then we would have more NHS workers, more dentists, Doctors, and no doubt all the help people would need. PLUS JOBS…
Many of the Islands NHS workers commute to here from mainland.. a TUNNEL would make it so much easier, for everyone.
But we would have more homeless, MOST with ‘issues’ more druggies taking advantage of all the easy drugs the Isle smuggles in, more ethnics happy to work in that industry, father children but ensure they don’t stay around to foot the bills, more travellers to camp in fields and live from crime, more people to build even more of our green fields to concrete, not for a while but forever.
I ‘suggest’ it is YOU who needs mental health care IF you truly think a ‘tunnel’ will make life better for the majority here.
Blinkered short sighted fool at best imo
IF the ‘other side’ of the Solent is better why not move there NOW?
Well said, about time someone told him the grass aint always greener.
About time these people buy a one way ticket to Croyden.
The ferries provide a natural barrier to the vast majority of homeless that live on the mainland – they cannot or will not pay the ferry fare and know that they have very limited options on where to go, if things don’t work out, as well as having to buy another ferry ticket to leave.
the ferries also prevent the large convoys of traveller caravans just pitching up overnight, as they cannot suddenly appear and the cost on the ferries puts them off.
whilst crime is like anywhere else, criminals know that the ferries are a hindrance to their plans, as they must wait for the next one and ease of escape is hampered. It costs virtually nothing to get a bus ride to another town or city on the mainland and commit crime then leave- not so cheap to turn up here for the same reason.
Sadly Nowheres safe on this island anymore
Nothing wrong with Blackgang !
