The new chairman of the Isle of Wight Council has announced his chosen charity for the coming year.
Councillor Charles Chapman, who was elected as chairman by Full Council at the annual general meeting on Wednesday 20th May, will help to raise funds for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice over the coming year.
After being elected, Councillor Chapman paid tribute to out going chairman, Councillor Ian Ward, who last year raised £2,200 for St Vincent’s Residential Home in Ryde which provides housing for veterans and those who depend on them, and £800 for the Royal British Legion during his time as chairman. He also thanked council members, officers for their ongoing support of the civic service, as well as the Lord-Lieutenant and the High Sheriff for their support of the chairman and vice chairman of the council.
He said:
“It has been a real privilege to work with Ian over the last year as his vice chairman, we have had a fabulous time promoting the Island and representing the council at a wide range of events. Ian has welcomed royalty and other visiting dignitaries to the Island while tirelessly working for local people. I’d particularly like to highlight the work Ian has done for those in residential care and those involved in his chosen charities.
“Ian and his consort Connie have set a high standard of public service which will be hard to follow and I thank him for his guidance over the last year. I am looking forward to the year ahead, working cross party and with the Island’s MP for the betterment of the Island – and working hard to promote my chosen charity, the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.”
Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox was elected as vice chairman of the council and will support Councillor Chapman with his civic duties over the coming year.
