The Isle of Wight Council is making it easier for tradespeople to park close to where they are working.
A new business waiver permit is now available giving flexibility for tradespeople visiting customers where parking restrictions would normally apply.
The permit allows parking within council pay and display areas — both on and off the street — as well as resident parking bays, as part of an initial 12-month pilot.
The purpose of the permit is to allow tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians and builders sufficient time to complete their business with the customer they are visiting. The permit is not valid at any other time.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said he had received many requests for such a permit on the Island.
He said:
“The introduction of the permit is designed to give flexibility to trades people where it is necessary to park as close as possible to the resident’s premises.
“We want to support those businesses who in turn are supporting our residents, often vulnerable, in times of emergencies and call out work.
Article continues below this advertisement “It is difficult enough in many circumstances for critical or planned work to be carried out effectively because of parking issues and I am confident this scheme will help many residents and trades people alike.
“Please do take advantage of the three-month introductory offer which is designed to encourage business take up of the scheme during the first year of operation.”
Permits cost £640 (or £53.34 per month) if purchased within July to September 2023. From October onwards permits will cost £960 (or £80 per month).

Island Roads are Lawless, there are no rules
Bring in Islandwide permit parking is the answer, it will also raise
revenue for the bankrupt IW Council who keep pleading poverty and are
forever raising our council tax.
Reduce council tax and bring in Parking permits.
Much fairer system for all.
Parking Permits would be a great idea down many Island Roads.
Some Households fill the streets with 3 or 4 vehicles, yet some of us
only own 2 vehicles and struggle to find a space to park.
Only have two vehicles, oh you poor thing.
The cost is frankly ridiculous. Absolutely not worth it for the odd callout to a property without parking… just pay at meter.

No Law on the Island so it does not matter,
Many Roads are filled with vehicles parked along Roads with
no mot
There’s been a van parked down Great Preston Rd Ryde for over
5 months with no mot, my Father contacted Island Roads and the
District Steward for Ryde and the Van is still parked along Great Preston Rd.
It will rot along the Road, the authorities are not bothered about vehicles
being parked along a Road with no mot, even though DVLA state owners will
be fined £1000.00
IW Council are more concerned about what bag you put your rubbish in.

Who cares if vehicles are parked along a Road with no Mot,
as long as it’s not being used it’s doing no harm.
If the authorities were bothered about it they would have it removed,
obviously they are not bothered.
We are in a credit crunch, maybe the owner of the vehicle is
feeling the pinch like many of us.

It’s actually completely bonkers – parking in on first come, first served basis anyway so there’s absolutely zero guarantee you park up when you want where you want/need to. I genuinely wonder whose baby this idea is.
Someone tell me what the difference between this new business waiver permit and a yearly parking permit the price is about the same.
Why on earth would they pay for this permit when they park wherever they want when they want, no matter how inconvenient.

Many of them even have their own NO Waiting Cones they carry in their vehicles with them.
That’s the beauty of the Island, it is lawless when it comes to
Parking.
Heh, at first I thought it’s a waiver to allow for more outdoor dining, maybe a street closure on the weekend or something to organise massive board games outside Snacks & Ladders for the kiddos, stuff like that, more organic space used for whatever, skateboarding, playing music and so on – since it’s summer time, July’s heatwave is upon us and a lot of prime estate in the city centre is taken away by empty cars just sitting there… oh man, I was so keen to read about some cool initiative! But it’s only literally more parking permits, haha.
£960 is a waiver?. Can’t use other than when working?. Might as well just pay for ticket or even chance getting a few parking fines and still work out much cheaper. Council park where they like on business at tax payers exp why? . Just put orange wirly light on, park half on pavement and get Island Roads sticker and all good
Builders vans with hazard lights on, parked all over the pavements from now on then.
You would be a fool to pay the council permit charge, it’s just a contribution to their xmas bonus anyway.
