The occupants of a car that careered off the road ending up in a field off The Downs have somehow managed to escape the wreckage with their lives.
The apparent single vehicle incident occurred somewhen overnight and has seen a car come to rest in a field off Mersley Downs.
At some point between last night (Thursday) and this morning (Friday) the vehicle – believed to be a VW Touran – was travelling down The Downs Road when it mounted the verge to the offside, smashed into a road sign and fence before ending up wedged in the woodland.
It is believed that the car was going at some speed having left the road around halfway up the hill to Lime Kiln Shute, ending up around 40 metres into private land.
A road sign pole that was taken out by the out-of-control vehicle had ended up further even into the field, demonstrating the force of the impact.
With such heavy damage sustained it is unclear as to how the occupants got out of the wreckage alive and left the scene close to Knighton Shute.
Police have been informed.
UPDATE @ 14:10 – Police have confirmed that they were called to the scene at 10:05.
The driver of the vehicle attended hospital as a precaution but is not reported to have sustained any injuries.

It was like that Thursday afternoon at 4:30pm I noticed the bank and sign had been hit
Surprising what drugs and alcohol do.
More and more so called drivers will continue driving at ridiculous speeds, and they will always be backed up by more idiots on here…they will never accept driving standards are unacceptable on this island, if its not drugs or drink, it will be speed….more idiots will be along soon..
People keep on about speed all the time it’s not just speed bet most of them speed .some people just can’t drive they cannot reverse or indicate and cannot stay on there side of the road slow drivers can cause accident too
Yes, so many cars on the island don’t have indicators or they just don’t work!!!!!!!!
The standard of driving here is appalling because nothing has been done to address it before. Times are ‘a changing’.
The Police have now recognised there is a massive problem here with drug and drink driving and speeding. Give them a chance. They have caught so many in the little time it has been going. It was about time they introduced ‘unmarked’ Police cars on the island! So many to still to catch.
My money is on drug and or drink driving, plus an idiot behind the wheel, equals this end result. Just call me Mystic Megg!
Drunk or stoned driver
So not a mystery, just waiting for the facts to be known.. And as usual, the Armchair Sleuths have made their minds up before Poirot gets on the case.
She showed a positive drugs test in her system, and driving too fast, how much more evidence do people like you want???..
How do you know this
It says they were driving too fast but says absolutely nothing about driving with drugs in their system.
I’m shocked that a metallic red electric jaguar didn’t end up in the fields near shalfleet last night. Overtook on a corner Infront of a police van well in excess of the speed limit, as I was doing 60. Shocking drivers on the island at the moment. Too many older drivers too that seem to drive very slow, causing motorists behind to take chances. Drive to the road conditions but not to your condition.
Not quite sure what “older drivers” have to do with it! If motorists take chances, that’s down to them, nobody else!
Why were you doing 60mph,as it was cold and there could of been icy surfaces, also tyres do not work as good when cold.
“I was driving at 60” …. maybe take heed of your own comment – drive to the road conditions not your condition.
Obviously you are of the type that considers as speed limit to be a minimum, not a maximum at safe conditions.
How about instead of ranting about how you are being held up for a nanosecond to maybe realise you could easily be the cause of an accident with your impatience.
Nobody causes other drivers to take chances. The “other drivers” do it because of their own impatience or stupidity.
Nobody is forced to overtake anyone. They must wait until it is safe to do so, and at a speed that does not break the speed limit. It is this type of driving that is shocking.Remember that a speed limit is a limit, not a target.
What a stupid post.
sooooo many accidents.
So many on their roofs as well !
Is nobody going do anything about it….like loads of speed cameras which would make a fortune and hopefully prevent some innocent person from being killed by these reckless drivers.
Almost every time we go out someone is careering around with their foot on the floor, jumping lights, or overtaking inappropriately.
It’s no pleasure driving anymore.
AND before anybody mentions old people; its the new young drivers showing off that I am talking about. Not experienced drivers.
Why is this a “mystery”? Take the number plate and hey presto! Anyway hope the occupant(s) are ok regardless.
You wont find older people speeding, jumping lights, overtaking in innapropriate places.
Drink driving and high on drugs.
They drive with care and it is probably one of their only means of independence, getting their shopping or seeing someone.
Just remember one day YOU will be elderly…have difficulty walking, needing to get some food for yourself, not wanting to be a problem to anyone.
For gods sake have a heart.
Long time since “somewhen” got an airing! Bravo. Maybe slip “everywhither” and “ereward” in next week.
They roadside withies were obviously far to limmer to stop the vehicle from overturning.
Thank you for that intellectually thought provoking contribution.
Let me guess a oap who should not be allowed behind the wheel
Westmore, you appear to be a moron who should not be allowed to comment with your blatant ageism.
AW don’t reach the dizzy heights of moron.
and your the islands No1 driver. prat
Door knob bob
What a worrying sight.
Hope to God that the person is ok! and not lying injured in a hedge somewhere.
Unfortunately these awful accidents can happen to anyone at anytime on our faster roads. Life is very precious and must be treasured, this just shows how close the poor soul came….
Unknown where you have been hiding for like 50 years… the roads here are not any better, or faster.. in fact the speed limits are lower than 50 years ago, and many of the roads have potholes,…
As to those moaning about elderly drivers, excuse me, but they are not in a hurry to get anywhere, older drivers leave home with plenty of time to get someplace, because they know some young racer will cause an accident and hold them up for some amount of time.
So to ALL drivers SLOW DOWN and L O O K…
Islands answer to Evel Knieval and H-H- Houdini?
Your reporter obviously a true culkhead including Isle of Wight word “somewhen”.
Driving too fast, again. When will people learn to slow down!
Just maybe this driver will realise, just because there is not a vehicle in front, there are still speed limits, and for a reason !!
They have to have been injured. No way do you just walk away unscathed from a roll like that.
Especially a cheese roll….
