UPDATED: The main road between Ryde and Newport – Racecourse into Fairlee Road – has been closed in both directions by Police this evening (Thursday) due to a road traffic collision involving at least 3 vehicles.
Police and ambulance crews are currently on scene half way along the straight section of road, although no one is thought to be seriously injured.
A Volvo, a Mini and a Vauxhall Corsa have all been involved. It is thought the driver of 1 of the vehicles fell asleep at the wheel.
Emergency services were called to the scene at just before 17:50.
UPDATE @ 18:17 – Police have reopened Racecourse in an Eastbound direction, although traffic remains heavy heading out of Newport.
All traffic heading into Newport is being diverted via Staplers Road.
Bus operator Southern Vectis are warning passengers of significant delays to their services.
UPDATE @ 18:47 – All 3 vehicles have been recovered from the scene by Bartletts Service Station, however the road remains closed whilst Island Roads operatives clear a spill and debris from the carriageway.
1 person, the driver of the Corsa, has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – Racecourse has now reopened in both directions. Traffic remains heavy in the area.
