There is good news for motorists this Friday morning as Lake Hill, between Sandown and Lake, has finally reopened in both directions – just in time for the busy Bank Holiday weekend.
The main road through The Bay has been one-way since February to enable railway bridge repairs. But now, after almost 15 weeks, the concrete barriers and scaffolding have been removed and the carriageway is flowing in both directions once again.
It means that traffic heading into Sandown no longer has to divert via Perowne Way.
Initially it had been hoped that the bridge repairs and painting would be completed by 5th May but an extension was applied for to drag out the works by a further 4 weeks.
Thankfully, the work has been completed within 3 weeks of that extension, leaving the iron bridge over Lake Hill looking the best it has in decades.
It was back in November 2022 that Island Echo exclusively revealed that the disruptive works would be going ahead. It was initially planned for the scheme to get underway on 6th January 2023, but the closure didn’t come into force until 13th February.
The return to normal should speed up travel time through The Bay, especially as locals and visitors alike descend on the seaside towns of Sandown and Shanklin for the long weekend.
Bet the folk in Perowne way are putting the flags out …..

A proper firm could have done it over a weekend, absolutely shocking it could be dragged out for 15 weeks!!
About time, unfortunately now perowne way will lose the buses now
They now need to repair Perowne way and the Fairway!
All the extra traffic along the Fairway has made it feel like driving across a ploughed field so perhaps it might be a bit early for the residents of Perowne Way to celebrate just yet if the Fairway now needs to be resurfaced?

Ugh, At last..To late to save the mangled road surface of the Fairway & Perowne way, which will no doubt lead to Gas & Water leaks. Just the Carve up at Yarbridge cross roads to sort out now..
As you mention Yarbridge why are the roads being dug up again. Why also do they have two sets of lights causing the road to be blocked.

Why does everything take so long to do on the Island.
Everything over runs, look at the interchange works on the esplanade Ryde.
Can we take bets on where the next road closure will be?
Where’s the next diversion and set of temporary traffic lights going to be located?
Or…wouldn’t it be nice if they gave us the summer off from this constant round of roadworks, road closures, diversions and temporary lights? But, I guess that’s a forlorn hope.
You could just go on the Island Roads website to see where the next roadworks are planned to occur.
Well, we got loads of road closing in the future for the pop festival but allegedly, sign posted diversions. Lets see how many of the diversions get dug up just to prove how incompetent those in charge are, that can’t work out that the diversions need to be flowing!

Though it actually closed just before Lake Hill reopened so it may not count. (But has been closed for three days so far.)
It it is, however, causing a big diversion for the buses even though it didn’t even warrant its own headline on here. (Buried in a story about another sinkhole in Ventnor).

Its alright for you drivers now it’s done we who have to get a bus now have to trek round to jewsons, one of the 3 buses would be nice to come through perowne way.
