Fairlee Road in Newport has reopened this afternoon (Friday) following an 11-day closure that has caused widespread disruption across the Isle of Wight.
The key arterial route, linking Newport with East Cowes, Wootton and Ryde, has been shut since 08:00 on Monday 20th April to allow for the installation of a new sewer and water connection.
The closure, in place 24 hours a day, has led to significant congestion on surrounding roads, with long delays reported on Park Road, Whiterails Road, Staplers Road, Long Lane and Coppins Bridge.
Motorists have been forced onto diversion routes throughout the works, with traffic queues becoming a daily issue during peak times.
It is expected that the road will reopen at 17:00 today (Friday 1st May), restoring normal traffic flow in and out of the county town.
During the closure, Southern Vectis diverted several routes including the 5, 9, 49, 59, N5 and N9, with bus stops between Hillside and Binfield Corner not served.
Taking to Facebook, a D.A.R.E.S spokesperson has said:
“We understand the road closure will have caused significant disruption and increased traffic across the Island and we apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused to residents, commuters, and local businesses.
“These works were carried out by our team on behalf of a client, and we’ve been working as efficiently and safely as possible to complete the job to the required standard and time scale.
“We’d also like to take a moment to encourage you to continue supporting the local businesses in and around the affected area, many of whom may have felt the impact of the closure over this period. All are vital for our local economy.
“Your understanding and support are truly appreciated. Thank you again for bearing with us while these essential works were completed.
