A motorcyclist who defied the lockdown rules to enjoy a ride out in the sunshine yesterday (Saturday) lost control of his bike and sustained serious injuries.
Police and paramedics were called to a single vehicle collision – which is thought to have occurred in the South East Wight shortly before 17:45 – when a motorcyclist lost control of their bike and crashed.
The rider sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident and was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital. 2 ambulances from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were dispatched to assist with the incident.
When questioned by Police about the purpose of their journey, the injured motorcyclist replied with “just fancied a ride”.
A fellow rider who was first on the scene and helped out also couldn’t give a plausible reason as to the purpose of their journey.
Sgt Taylor of the Isle of Wight Police has said:
“Unfortunately this is an example of why we ask people not to make unnecessary journeys during this current time.
”We are human and understand the weather is nice and ordinarily we would be doing social things and making the most of it, but at this difficult time we have these restrictions for a reason and ask you to please stick to them”.

No different to the 100+ lorries, vans and bystanders who turn up outside the hospital on a Thursday evening at 8
Exactly!!
But ‘Isle of Wight’ Police didn’t leave a comment on that little advertising bung from Georgina.
But don’t forget – you don’t have to stick to any of the rules as long as you add “for the NHS” after whatever you’re doing. Then it’s all fine.
Well said!!!
I agree with lockdown rules but it’s no different from a car going out for a drive like half the island have been doing, theres people out at b&q buying soil and plants etc in a pandemic so before all the negative people start jumping on the negative bus just use your brain and think……..a motorcycle accident or hundreds of people at b&q deciding to do DIY or gardening just because there ‘bored’ at home and potentially spreading covid-19…….
Just goes to show how much of a 42 carrot plonker you really are….calling a bike rider a dick when you dont know them.
What you dont find essential may be essential to someone else, so that ‘dick’ buying plants may be keeping them sane in this lock down! Dont be so judgemental
Well said
Your the dick, staying at home judging others..
For doing what I’m told…..To save lives.
By the way, it’s you’re.
What a clueless sheep. Do you believe everything you are told? It’s all lies.
Carry on ‘doing what you’re told’ Mr. Stay At Home. You’re a good little worker ant and the government loves you!
You are merely a sheep with no idea.!.. best you just #uck off and get a life you curtain twitching moron !
Regardless, B&Q is an essential store allowed to open (Government assessment) Going out for a ride because you fancy it isn’t lawful. Two totally different situations.
So just because the goverment say something does that mean its right ? Going to b&q for soil and plant pots isnt a essential…..like I said all these idiots could of done these jobs months ago but only now doing them as there bored and gunna potentially spread covid-19 more than going out on a motorbike……
before making comments about people going to B&Q, think why they are there, for example gardening is a relaxing pass-time for lots of people (not me) and also helps with mental health, yes there is a risk of people catching the virus, if they mask and glove up and also follow the store guidelines then the risk would be greatly reduced…people shopping for gardening supplies to help with the health and well being during this time is a must, after all the more that end up in the system due to mental health puts more strain on our wonderful NHS staff….by the way gardening is seasonal, each month there is something different to do in the garden …so please let these people do their gardening in the peace they deserve. after all gardening to some people is just as important as food shopping.
It is a shame BQ could not get thier act together and deliver gardening supplies etc..
Going out is lawful, on your motorcycle or in your car. It is not advised. Not illegal.
But at least they are Islanders, Red Funnel are still bringing main land people over here without being challenged for the reason to visit. And there are many of them.
Its strange, i
m from the mainland, but we live here, own our house outright so to speak, our life is here. My car is Hampshire/Dorset registered, not HW (VRM). So IF you have a sparkly new sooper dooper Range Rover, London registered (VRM) why would you rock up to Tescos in Ryde park in the Loading bay pick up point where yours is the only vehicle and then sticking out like a sore thumb flounce (together) toward the entrance. Id have kept a low profile if i`d done the same and travelled, to say, Bournemouth. No doubt Narcissism knows no bounds.I get your point but not everyone here buys their car from island dealers – even brand new ones. Savvy shoppers often find much better deals on the “North Island”.
Whats the difference between a Hedgehog and a Range Rover ?
A hedgehog has all the pricks on the outside………
At least motorcycling is socially distanced and wearing protective clothing like gloves and face masks. And if the 2and motorbike hadn’t come along matey could have been left there for a long time
Socially distanced, until you fall off that is. Iv’e never tried administering first aid from 2 meters but I imagine that it would be quite difficult. Even if you are not concerned for your own safety it might be prudent in these difficult times to consider what impact your actions might have on others.
Well done Tracy. At last, a common sense comment.
Far too many motorcycles about, the noise they make is horrendous.
On the subject of motorcycles – most motorcycles today have exhaust systems that make the machine run quieter, however, many clever idiots deem it a good idea to alter the system to make them noisier so a 50 cc machine can make more noise that a 1000cc one, problem is we have no trained Traffic Police Officers on the Island who could stop them and carry out a vehicle examination to prove the defect and report them, so Police here ignore them and thus more and more idiots alter their bikes
Or stop the ignorant little jerks who insist, as soon as the sun comes out, to open all the car windows and blare rubbish music out when they blast around the roads……
If the government are going to introduce a lock down then do what it says on the tin LOCKDOWN don’t go opening up more shops etc and expect people to stay at home cause they won’t
Not sure what is worse that or the 4 morons that came roaring along the footpath that runs from The Breeze to Seaclose park on 4 dirt bikes and did wheelies right across Seaclose Park at 7.30 yesterday evening. Went along to the Quay on the road. No number plates or helmets.
How about all the bicycles on the they should be told to stay at home!!
Because it’s transport to and from work for a lot of key workers. Stupid idea
My son was nearly killed by these 4 idiots
I hope they fell in the river
I saw those 4 lads Saturday afternoon ride past Lidl just before 8pm, no crash helmets, not one of them!!
One to report on Hamphire Police’s website, if you haven’t already of course.
I understand we are in lockdown and people shouldn’t be going out but can we for a moment just think how badly hurt this person could be? We don’t know what thei background is their life their mental state? What if going for that ride on their bike was the only thing making them happy all because we are in lockdown doesn’t make this any less of a tragedy the family will still be worried
Sadly most of us are unable to do the one thing that “makes us happy” whatever that may be. But rules are rules (or at least they should be) we are all in this together
Emily, that though is for the NHS to deal with. The injuries are not up for discussion it is the event that is.
Any fool can do the ‘hope they are not too bad’ or, in fatal cases do ‘RiP’ but pointless, this is for discussion not PC pointless and often false sentiment.
Clearly all right minded people don’t relish anyone being hurt or killed, but keep writing sentimental hog wash is pointless. Bet you listen to radio Solent?
Given the response from the motorcyclist, reported in the news report here, he doesn’t sound like a very nice, responsible person, just sounds like a typical do as he likes type of idiot.
He does not appear to have learnt from the experience , and the Police donot seem to be bothered either , just another idiot on the Islands roads , trouble is we have to take our chances with prats like this when we have to go out about our legal business.
They aren
t happy now are they , now that they have fallen off, we dont know the full story on this incident but there has been an unbelievable increase in collisions between one vehicle and roadside property on the Island in the past three or four years and it is down to bad driving/riding, people will blame the vehicle or the road but it is bad driving and usually driving to fast for the conditions. As for mental state , if the person involved was in some “mental state” then they should not have been driving anyway since they only went out because the fancied it. The result being several people from the Emergency Services and NHS have been inconvenienced to say the least due to this persons selfishness. This was just west of Whale Chine where there is a dangerous double bend in the Military Road, not in the south east of the Island as stated. There was one ambulance, a paramedic Rapid Response Vehicle and a police car on the scene.
There’s nothing remotely dangerous about the double bend, Paul. It’s the speed at which some people take it that’s the problem.
Because most people on bikes, and car drivers too, drive like idiots. I see it every single day.
obviously not doing such a great job at staying at home then or do you see all this out your window :/
It is invisible. If it is dark or foggy you could end up in the field at 40 mph and as the speed limit there is 60, 40 is not speeding.
Which from the Freshwater direction is completely invisible apart from a small double bend sigh about 50 yaryds away. Desperately needs some chevrons before someone ends up in the field.
Some have ended up in the fields anywhere alone that road for one reason or another, some die some don’t, it’s not just that ‘s’ bend. Chevrons, better signs will make little or no difference, people are people and do their own thing regardless, some of those will still end up in the fields, most will require help in one form or another, be it from a biker mate and hobble off or fire crew to cut them out. People are not perfect or faultless and most will have ‘accidents’, depends where, when and how it happens as to the outcome.
There really are some nasty bigoted people on this island
You only just finding that out? Some really horrible bigots here… It’s in their mutated DNA.
More like too many soft lefty people who like and make excuses for everyone except actual, decent people, Anyone who just wants to live a quiet. peaceful life is discriminated against, and those who like to make a lot of noise and be reckless and uncaring how they adversely affect others, is to be praised and defended.
Not sure what you are referring to when you make the comment “bigoted people” People are entitled to their opinion that`s what a forum is all about , but it is clear that if the motorcyclist was the only one involved then he must have been doing something wrong, even if the road conditions change due to adverse weather, he should ride according to the conditions so to have crashed was his own fault
possible he cant drive his lorry asked any Wightlink staff grump old git
I’ve got dash cam footage of a motorbike speeding past me on sandown road near scew bridge around the same time…probably the same biker ! I was shopping for vulnerables before you all jump on me
Post it
It’s spelt “Skew”, for good reason!
So it’s fine for this motorcyclist to break restrictions but for the homeless guy who people wanted to lynch last week it’s not okay?
Hmm…
Well said.
Yep because he’s a homeless druggy waste of space!!
A lot of people are bending and breaking the lockdown rules too much, they are putting lots of peoples life’s at danger, I think it should of been like Spain, only on person allowed out in a car at a time, and only one person allowed to shop from a family at one time, exercise only from your front door would of stopped a lot of people breaking the rules.
Hes a free man he can do.as he pleases
We are all free Jim. The sheep will all meekly shuffle back to work when HMG says to go. They will still be at huge risk, but as they don’t think for themselves, wont’ care. Seems many love being ‘told’ what to do, by those in suits, still trusting Governments rather than their own minds.
No wonder so many working class were slaughtered in the wars. One whistle blow, and even though they knew they were going to be slaughtered, still went. Had assumed that mentality had left us, seems not.
You’ve obviously never been in the Forces numb nuts.
Well said banjo
And if they hadn’t gone? What are you suggesting? That the heroes who gave their life for this country were just stupid sheep? Not the heroes we have all been stupidly believing them to be? Thank you Frank for enlightening us
now we can go and pull down all those useless Cenotaph that were erected in their honour
And if your assumptions that most people who are not as smart as you are sheep, then why are you debating a person who did exactly the opposite, someone who ignored the rules and instructions to stay at home…… Very sheep like
sadly furloughed frank – you have gone too far.
The working classes fought in the second world war voluntarily, alongside others of different classes and social backgrounds.
They didn’t need a whistle, as they and everyone else knew, that if they did not stand up and fight, they would have been slaughtered on the ground, in their homes by the enemy, which showed no mercy.
I am glad that their mentality still prevails in this country today, even if it is in the form of outright disagreement or protest at what the government does and says – it proves the fighting spirit lives.
The only reason you have the freedom to spout that crap frank, is because of the sacrifices they made to ensure you have that right and freedom to express your view, even if it is not liked.
So what is your solution to dealing with this invisible killer ? I would love to say yes you are right do as you like but the trouble with that is , you may not suffer from the virus but could be a carrier and infect several others, we do not know, our government has tried to get people to act responsibly and isolate where possible since so far this has been proved to slow the spread of the virus, this mentality of ” I am a free person I can do as I like ” and ” I want I want”, “Nobody tells me what to do” all ME ME ME in the world today cannot work in any group or civillised community, there has to be order and control , and dare I say discipline. Here we need self discipline something that many selfish people donot seem to have , we also need respect for others and the responsibility that goes with living in any country, you are expected to be patient ,to live by rules or you have mayhem. It is about time people grew up and accepted that this virus is a new threat to everyone it is a killer and nobody has a solution yet, in the meantime all we can do is isolate as much as possible to help save the lives of those around us, think of others not just yourself
So he’s “a free man who can do as he pleases”. Well he did! And look at the result of him doing as he pleases.
Well maybe other people should also exercise their right to do as they please also, and if that means they don’t feel like rushing over to help some motorcyclist who crashed off his bike, well they should exercise their right to ignore him..
Let’s all just do as we please from now on. So that means then that next time someone’s neighbours do as they please, with their noise and other peace shattering activities, the victim of them doing as they please can then go and actually do something about them, instead of suffering in silence. Because that is the result of everyone doing as they please – Anarchy.
Yet fine for the well to do, to be ‘exercising’ their horses on miles of roads and bridle paths. They are then not at risk of being bucked off?
One rule for them, as usual.
No it wasnt, The guy was local to the accident site so was well within his rights to take his exercise as he sees fit !
There was a person kite surfing on Thursday in ryde and another swimming in the harbour entrance, again at ryde.
Or the cyclist out in pairs or groups.. dumb gov.
Obviously speeding……. if it was along the military road. They do it all the time along that stretch. Idiots.
I just think everyone breaking the lock down rules one way or another. Your get one person saying shouldn’t be out on he’s bike but then drives 20 mins to go and buy some flowers for their garden. What’s the difference.
Kev well bloody said !
Ridiculous if anyone wants to go for a ride, then they can! He was out on his own… and clearly he can think for his self…for now
Shame they don’t do something about all the idiots on bicycles that seem to be able to go out where they like all the time for hours on end
