UPDATED: The main Sandown to Newport road has been closed in both directions as a result of a serious, potentially life-threatening crash between a motorcycle and a car.
The incident has occurred outside the House of Chilli on the A3056 between Winford Road and Watery Lane.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are in attendance with multiple ambulances and an senior officer.
Hampshire Constabulary are leading the incident and have established a firm road closure. They were called to the scene at around 09:50.
UPDATE @ 11:00 – Island Roads have put a hard road closure in place at the request of Police, indicating that the road is likely to remain closed for sometime.
Motorists are being diverted via Watery Lane and Winford Road, although traffic is heavy on the narrow lanes.
UPDATE @ 12:30 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that they have arrested 1 person at the scene in connection with the crash, which has involved an Audi TT and a motorcycle.
The condition of the motorcyclist is currently unknown.
The A3056 remains closed in both directions this lunchtime.
UPDATE @ 13:33 – The road has now been re-opened in both directions following recovery of the vehicles involved.
The injured motorcyclist is understood to be in a stable condition.
