The Royal George Memorial Garden at the eastern end of The Strand near Ryde seafront has been left looking worse for wear following the destruction of the 2 trees. They have been pulled out of the ground and ripped apart.
It is apparent that an act of mindless vandalism is to blame for the damage.
In June 2016, the garden was re-dedicated to the memory of the lives lost on board HMS Royal George in 1782. It followed works by Southern Water to help alleviate flooding in the area.
Councillor Wayne Whittle of Ryde East Ward has this morning said:
“It’s very disappointing to see such deliberate damage to our memorial garden. A tree shredder couldn’t have done a better job.
“If any local residents saw or heard this going on last night please contact the Police on 101”
The debris has now been cleared by Council contractors.
