Police and paramedics are in attendance at a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the outskirts of Newport this afternoon (Saturday).
The incident – which took place on Whiterails Road just outside Butterfly World – occurred at around 15:45 and has seen a Mazda crash into verge on the opposite side of the road ending up stricken in the middle of the carriageway.
Significant damage has been caused to the front of the vehicle – which has seen its engine ripped out as a result.
Tyre marks are visible in the middle of the carriageway at the point where the driver lost control.
Debris – including the engine – has been left scattered around with Police officers currently sweeping the road ahead of the arrival of recovery.
A single fire appliance from Newport was also mobilised to the scene amid fears the occupant of the vehicle was trapped but they have since stood down.
It is unclear however as to what injuries have been sustained, despite the Operational Commander from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at the scene.
A hard road closure is in place at the junction with Wootton Common Crossroads, whilst the road remains open at the other end at the junction with Blacklands Lane.
Southern Vectis route 9 buses are diverting via Long Lane as a result.

How just how!! It’s bell pieces like this that being so much attention from the police and their speed guns, now we all got to be paranoid of creeping a few mph over, still least it wasn’t on its roof!
Driving to fast and hit a rut in the road.
Another d@#khead whom5hinos they can drive not understanding the islands roads. He or she and everyone else is lucky nothing was coming in the other direction. What a C U next Tuesday
Seen them driving down there, somewhat to fast then, prat.
The police should have closed both ends as I was on the bus and we had to reverse to a spot where the bus driver could turn around, a few people on the bus was so helpful and helped the driver reverse and letting her know if to stop because of a car turning also a nice passenger got off the bus and helped her reverse into the island riding school, she did a great job and thank you to the passengers who helped her reverse/reverse into island riding centre.
if you can’t drive sensibly then don’t drive at all (what if a teenager was crossing the road and got hit by the car or a car with kids in it was coming towards him. People could have been seriously hurt) thankfully no one else was involved
That’s what we call respect for each other..
Well done for pulling together, I wish we could help each other throughout the UK, instead of being divided and treated like programmed droids by the mainstream media…..Look between the lines and go with your gut feeling that feels right…
Every single day now there is a report of a vehicle incident of some sort on the island. What is happening? I no longer believe it’s just nippers blowing the exhaust tubes after a few Babyshams. Too many vehicles, too many cyclists, too many horses, too many unsuitable roads for the traffic the housing situation is encouraging.
No wonder why tourists call our isle of Wight the Isle Of Shit now
It’s just bad and dangerous drivers that try to blame everyone or everything else, apart from their bad driving. Too many vehicles, cyclists or horses doesn’t cause an accident. It’s drivers deciding to make dangerous maneuvers.
…and more media reporting on non-news events like this delivered straight to you in near real time. Just because you see more of it on the internet these days, doesn’t mean there is more.
And dancing behind the scenes behind them movie screens
definately brim full of something….
Another dirty pot head driver
More bloody maniacs will be along soon, I’m sick of these turds putting all of us in serious danger….
Don’t go outside then
Practice what you preach, then the rest of us can driver safely….
Drink driving is safe as long as you don’t crash, mate
Trying keeping one hand off yourself when you drive 😉
more good island driving
It’s a Monty Python life on the isle of wight.
Well I don’t know terrible driving people need to learn how to drive with due care and attention and, bloody indicate where your going for a change please
If hitting the verge tore the engine out there was something seriously wrong with that car,
Yes the driver
It was the tree he hit first, then ended up in the verge.
I think it’s terrible.
Keep the idiot off the roads forever please. Getting very dangerous on those isle of wight roads even with drug’s ,drink and the speed in cars which may not be in good good order and the road surface. Not a great holiday spot now as the place is dangerous.
Third crash in a month in that exact location but island roads say they won’t reduce the speed limit. Beggars belief tbh
It’s not the councils fault, otherwise we would all crash there…The truth being, uneducated, ignorant, or drugged up, drunk idiotic drivers that have no respect for anyone’s life.. Other’s also use the roads for simply going about there daily business, and the selfish idiots don’t give a stuff about your safety…
It’s like a cancer in so called society now, we have all become very selfish in life, respect for each other has gone….
nothing wrong with the speed limit
just need to be aware of:
>other traffic
>road conditions
>junctions & turnings
>your own ability (or lack of as it seems in this case)
Make one wonder at what speed driver was going… all that damage… Definitely a RE-Test at drivers expense… LEARN TO DRIVE
I hope the butterflies are ok
