Police have descended on the town of Shanklin tonight (Saturday) following reports of a male with a weapon.
Officers initially responded to a triple nine call at just before 21:10 with several units making best speed to the area on blue lights and sirens.
Emergency teams didn’t go directly to the scene of the incident on Wilton Park Road though, with a rendezvous point established nearby.
Both Police and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have now moved in on the target address, where 1 male has been detained and a weapon – thought to be a ‘sword’ or similar bladed article – seized.
Officers have been seen entering the apartment block armed with a shield.
There is not thought to be any risk to the wider community and the incident appears to be contained.
UPDATE @ 22:40 – 1 male has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
The incident has been brought to a safe conclusion.

First Newport, now Shanklin, where next?
Ryde
Why Ryde???? Where do you live?
Shanklin say no mire
This was an exercise in self harm prevention, please be kind i know this bloke..headline should read Lockdown Breakdown, same catagory as Woman enters water etc..
Not much chance of kindness here my friend. The comment section is usually just a judgemental echo chamber.
Hope he makes a good recovery and gets back on track. These lockdowns are pushing people to breaking point.
Thanks for your understanding, he’s a loved member of the surf community and we all wish him well and a return to the line up asap.
I hope he gets the help he needs and feels better soon
I know who the person is now you mention about the surfing community. I obviously won’t mention names or go into details but I know he is a good guy. Wish him well for me when you see him, he would have known me from round the corner at Avenue Road a couple of years back.
The Flat Earth Society say that these lockdowns are pushing people over the edge.
I wish these newspaper headlines wouldn’t sensationalise. They make it sound like Jack the Ripper is on the prowl. This is hardly that!!
The guy is probably at the end of his tether and having dealt with Island mental health services I’m not surprised….
Sadly, a lot of people on here start typing before they know the full story. Island Echo’s judgemental headlines don’t help either! I hope he gets the help that he desperately needs.
It seems like Island Echo and County Press are about getting people to click on the articles rather than publishing the actual details. The standard of journalism is no better than the tabloid press.
I had a feeling it was him bless. Hope he’s ok
Hey take the simple route, blame it on Covid !!
