A man suffering from what is understood to be a self-inflicted, traumatic knife wound has been transported to St Mary’s Hospital this afternoon (Saturday).
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service was alerted to concerns for the welfare of a man at an address on Clatterford Road, Carisbrooke at 14:30.
A paramedic crew, operational commander and a critical care doctor were dispatched in response to the emergency alert.
Police joined their blue light colleagues in responding to the incident, which also saw Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance scrambled. However, the air ambulance was stood down as it approached the Island as the incident wasn’t as serious as first feared.
The casualty has suffered a non life-threatening but traumatic injury, which can be treated locally at St Mary’s Hospital.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that no third parties are involved.
The landing of a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter on the helipad at St Mary’s caught the attention of many earlier this afternoon, but is not connected with the above incident.
The Naval chopper touched down on the pad at around 15:00 – thought to be the first time a Lynx has landed at the hospital.
The reason is unknown, but is thought to be nothing more than a training exercise.
