A Shanklin man who was handed a conditional caution, but forgot to pay the fine, has been sentenced before a bench of Magistrates. Connor Desbrow, 34, of Coronation Gardens, admitted possession of a controlled drug of class-B (cannabis) and drunk and disorderly in a public place when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday). Prosecuting, Liz Miller, said that on the evening of the 3rd of April, Desbrow was removed from The Tap in Sandown after he became agitated and aggressive. Outside of the premises, a heavily intoxicated Desbrow began banging on the windows and doors in an attempt to regain entry. Police tried to get Desbrow to leave the area but he refused and so he was detained. The 34-year-old – who was stumbling on his feet and visibly uncoordinated – was searched and 2 buds of cannabis were found in his possession. Originally the case was dealt with by way of a conditional caution but Desbrow didn’t pay the £50 fine he was issued and so the case was brought to court. Defending himself, Desbrow said that he had a ‘lot going on at the time of the offence’ and that on the night in question he got ‘way too drunk and acted like an idiot’. When questioned as to why he didn’t pay the fine, Desbrow simply said he had ‘forgotten’. Magistrates fined him £40 and ordered he costs of £40 and a £16 surcharge fee.
