A man who was tasered by Police and sprayed in the face with PAVA spray remains in custody following an incident in Ryde last night (Sunday), which resulted in a car showroom window being smashed.
Police were called to East Street in the town at just before 19:00 after what Island Echo understands to be a fight in a flat spilled out onto the street. In total, some 6 units responded to the incident.
It had been reported that a woman had been assaulted and the window of Solent Autopoint had been damaged.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary responded to the scene and detained a suspect – a 31-year-old male – but not before bringing him under control using tactics open to them.
Once subdued, the male was placed into a cell van and taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
It has been confirmed that the 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage. He remains in custody at this time.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We were called at 6.53pm last night (Sunday) with reports of a woman being assaulted and a car showroom window being smashed in East Street, Ryde.
“A 31-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and assault occasioning actual bodily harm”.

I would have thought with that many police, there would be enough to restrain him…..I think I’m right in saying, some people could have heart problems that could die after a taser shot….
Police need to get tougher with such trash as the courts certainly won’t
It’s what plod live for, makes them hard.
Hope the woman is ok.
Where do I sign up?
The local pig farm.
Well some do but statistically that does severely cut the re-offending rate so it’s not all bad.
Its clear from your comment that you have never been or dealt with anything like this have you.
Have you tried restraining a nutter? They used to use truncheons back in the day.
And ,save tax payers money, if you break the law then that’s a possibility. Police don’t Taser for no reason.
Even for speeding??
He should not be an idiot then and he wouldnt have been tasered and gassed, think himself lucky , if this had happened anywhere in America he would be on a slab awaiting a post mortem.
Well don’t behave in such a way that the police have to deploy such tactics. Good police work in action I’d say.
They give fair warning before using it. The person has plenty of chance to play ball.
Not sure what is happening to the Island but all these arrests are a sure sign we need our own Police Force back and not jointly share with Hampshire. For numerous reasons the world is becoming very aggressive against mankind.
And I thought all this crime was going to come when they installed a fixed link? Maybe we need one to let these people off?
Very true.
There is probably more trouble on the Island per person than in Pompey.
And your statistics came from?
same thing that was ye mam’s gob last night 😉
Speak English!!
As far as I know, the Island has always been policed from Hampshire, it is only recently that the force name has been changed to include ‘Isle of Wight’ but nothing else has changed in that respect.
If the victim is in a relationship with this man, I do hope she receives whatever support she needs to leave.
Domestic violence serves no place in any relationship, whatever the circumstances. We should teach our children that it is simply a red line and wholly unacceptable.
Where do you think the chiildren who go onto become adults get it from, its called learnt behaviour,
FFS! The island doesn’t need these types living here. Make this idiot pay for the new glass, every penny. What a man he is, assaulting a woman!
I find that the courts rarely order an offender to pay for the damage caused or so it seems, reading court reports.Big mistake. Even if they have to pay at £10 a week for 10 years, index linked, tough.
Don’t like it then move?
Really!!!!!!!! He’s probably your mate. Couple of right chavs.
The full weight of the law lol.
6 police units for one man – possibly another one? My dear god… Prison officers deal with 94 cons for 3-4 wing officers. And deal with far more violent cons, mental health, hooch and drugs/meds.
Yes but most of the prisoners are well behaved because of illegal substances brought in by the warders.
Your argument is completely flawed, moaning about 6 units for one bloke..
In prison when someone starts gobbing-off at the screws they hit the bell and.. guess what.. about 20 screws come running into the wing.
Take your head out your arse before you comment
Screws have it harder as they deal with 94 plus cons per 3 or 4 wing staff.
It all depends on which prison.
The island screws have it easy, as it is a nonces prison.
Whilst the screws in HMP WINCHESTER (our local prison) earn every penny.
