46-year-old Nerijus Suminskas has been charged with attempted robbery after allegedly trying to steal a handbag from a woman in the car park of St Mary’s Hospital yesterday morning (Wednesday).
Police were called at 08:06 after a man had allegedly grabbed a woman in her 60s and tried to take her handbag.
The incident occurred in the North Car Park at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport.
Brave members of the public detained the suspect before Police arrived.
Now, a 46-year-old man has been charged with attempted robbery.
Nerijus Suminskas, of no fixed abode, has been remanded in custody to appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates Court later this morning.
UPDATE – Suminskas, a Lithuania national with no connection to the Isle of Wight whatsoever, has been remanded in custody to appear before the Crown Court.
Although Police initially said he tried to take the victim’s handbag, it has now been established he attempted to take the 62-year-old’s hospital access pass and her purse.
The 46-year-old will appear before the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 6th January 2023.
