A man armed with a knife standing on a cliff top in Shanklin led to the area being locked down last night (Sunday).
Police, paramedics and HM Coastguard were called to the Palmerston Road area at around 20:30 following reports that a male was on the wrong side of the railings overlooking the Esplanade.
A cordon was erected on the clifftop path and a local hotel locked its doors as officers negotiated with the male.
Thankfully, the situation was brought to a safe conclusion and the man was taken to hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, accompanied by Police.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that they were responding to a concern for welfare incident, but have refused to comment on whether a knife was recovered and whether the individual was detained under the Mental Health Act.
HM Coastguard has confirmed that Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ventnor and Bembridge were deployed to the incident after the alarm was raised at around 20:25.

When a lady was on top the roof at Preston close flats back in the 80’s threatening to jump, people in the gathered crowd were shouting “jump then you stupid Cow”
Some things have I guess changed for the better.
yes – but they did know her, knew what she was like and to be fair, most of the residents in preston scrubs in the 80’s weren’t exactly tofu eating hippies, full of peace, love and sweet harmony.
I grew in Preston close ,and all my family lived there , and not sure what you are saying about tofu
