17-year-old Macie Edkins-Wherry has once again been spreading festive cheer among care homes and the elderly in the community, with presents delivered to some 128 Islanders this Christmas. Since the days of lockdown, Macie has been handing out gifts using her own money, supported by friends and family. Island Echo first reported on Macie’s mission in 2020, with further coverage in 2021 and 2022. Despite now being 17 and holding down a job and other commitments, Macie has been determined to continue supporting lonely and vulnerable community members – and has even reached out to more care homes this year. In total 15 care homes have been visited, alongside those living in their own homes. Macie has said:
“Christmas is lonely for many people and sending them gifts makes them know they are thought of”.
Felicia Glover, Registered Manager of Merrydale Residential Home in Ryde, has said:
“It’s now become a lovely Christmas tradition for Macie to visit Merrydale Residential home bringing Christmas cheer and gifts for the residents. “Macie has been coming now since lockdown, and it’s always lovely to see her sharing Christmas presents from the kindness of her heart”.
