Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh tips will re-open on the Isle of Wight next week, but no general waste will be accepted and only cars will be permitted on site.
In order to maintain effective social distancing measures, to protect staff and visitors, the HWRCs (Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh) will limit the number of visitors within 30 minute periods. There will be 10 slots available per half-hour at Lynbottom and 5 per half-hour at Afton Marsh.
Residents can now book a time slot to go to the recycling centres (HWRCs) at www.iwight.com/hwrcbooking. Slots are available to book for up to 4 weeks in advance. Households can only book 1 slot within a 2-week period to ensure as many people who need to visit can do so.
Lynbottom will re-open with this reduced capacity from Monday (11th May) and Afton Marsh from Saturday 16th May 2020, with booking slots available from 10:00 to 17:00.
In a move that has angered Islanders, no general waste (non-recyclable/black bin), rubble, soil or DIY waste will be accepted on site. Furthermore, no vans, trailers or pickup trucks will be admitted in order to maintain flow of car-sized vehicle waste volumes only.
The following limited number of items can be taken to the HWRC:
• Garden waste
• Asbestos and plasterboard with a permit ONLY (plus booking slot).
• Waste electronics and electrical equipment (WEEE) no larger than an under-counter fridge.
• Batteries
• Wood (man Made and natural)
• Hard Plastics
HWRC operatives will not be able to assist removal of waste from vehicles as they normally would, in order to maintain effective social distancing.
Natasha Dix, Strategic Manger for Waste said:
“While people have been on lockdown, we appreciate that they may have focused on organising at home and may need to remove some excess items from their properties that they cannot store or that cannot be collected at the kerbside.
“We are still operating bulky waste collections if people cannot or do not want to travel to the tip. There are also a limited number of green waste subscriptions available if people would like to sign up for a fortnightly kerbside collection of their garden waste”.
Councillor Steve Hastings, Cabinet member for waste and recycling, has said:
“I would continue to request that people stay home, protect the NHS and save lives. Lockdown isn’t over. This managed re-opening is only to be used where excess waste cannot be stored at home or otherwise collected”.

What an utter waste of time that will be.
Pathetic!
So if you work from 8.00 til 5.00, you have go no chance of getting to the center, Brilliant IOW council, just when I thought you couldn’t get any worse you excel yourselves.
So where will the builders waste end up ? Dumped in the countryside!!
Commercial side is fully open!!!!!
Before the lockdown, Acton tip was run by 2 Gentlemen who had it all organised. Only 4 cars at a time and space between. It worked like clockwork and everyone was safe. Unless you can dump general waste what is the point
Just put out the general waste for the bin men obviously !
Why does everyone moan about anything on these threads lol ! Pathetic boring bunch !
Couldn’t agree more. Bunch of moaning losers. Will always see the negaitve. Would you all prefer they stay shut?
So what are people with vans pick ups going do with there waste .
Get a license and go to the commercial side.
Or use your wife’s car Lol
Oh dear another well thought out initiative by our Council. What assistance is this to anyone?
Omg this is laughable u might just as well keep it shut for god sake be interesting to see what people do take and how much there get in there car
Electricals accepted, well there’s plenty of money for the council getting all the valuable metal from them
Take the copper out and give it to someone who collects scrap, people need to realise when you recycle at the tip you’re working for the for free by doing all the work for them, they just sell it on
Might as well stay shut, what a WASTE of time, it’s laughable
Well we should be given a percentage of our council tax bill reduced! As they can’t offer what we pay for!
What a joke! Not those that already pay nothing for their council tax! Always the ones who do t get any help that suffer
So we still have to pay the full rate of council tax but are not getting the full service. this will lead to flytipping.what do builders do with waist.also there is no need to make the road one way if only 20 car a hour can use the dump. You could not make it up. This council would make a good comedy scetch for TV. One discussed tax payer
The council give nothing away just take take take for very little in return
What a fiasco only our council could dream up ideas like this , more bonfires and the consequences and cost that follow that.
No general waste ? ?? Wtf is a tip for
is it amey or the council thas organising this half hearted effort , remember when island reclamation used to run the ca site for island waste ?gone down hill since.
Either amey or the council mr Stewart would of had the final say I’d imagine , I bet his garden ain’t filled up with stuff that needs to go to the tip !!!!
It’s so “Isle of Wight”
Does this mean that we can give our refuse collectors more general waste?
No… binmen left black bags along our road last week, thy had complaints an had to come bk an collect them! Then I phoned the iow council an thy told me unless the black sacks are in the black bin thy will not take them!!! What do we pay council tax for???? Unbelievable this island is getting worse by the day!! We should all stop paying our council tax then see if thy get ther act together
They’re only restricting to force people to fly tip this means more fines..more revenue …oh plus the added bonus of all the money they will make on the scrap which is allowed …..its about time this party was voted OUT !!…..
What about metal items then or does that not come into the equation anymore?
The IW Council has just confirmed that theyhave lost the plot.
Just tried to register but the website will not accept my postcode so I will continue to dump my extra rubbish in the sea!
Its pathetic I know but when you are paying over £60 a week in council tax its the least I can do!
Will not try again to register!
LOAD OF SHIT
What low IQ morons came up with this nonsense? They really do live on another planet, no idea, concept or care what most of us are going through
What about cardboard?
Put it out on recycling day lol
What the idiots are saying is please fly tip as island roads have nothing to do apart from sit in yard
What a WASTE of time, no general waste – it’s general waste that’s built up at homes as kids off sch,off work etc.Make a main road one way for 20 cars in an hour ?. Given been closed 6 weeks and had £350 of my council tax tip needs to open as did till Amey, 7am – 6pm. Or not only fly tipping but soon we will have rat invasion and diseases , back yards and gardens are over flowing. Had 6 weeks staff not working could of changed layout at tip , why not put general waste skips in main town car parks ?only needs 1x staff member to monitor , can be be removed at end each day. What we pay council tax for – Waste – closed, Schools-closed, services-closed (been funded by extra government funding now), planning, highways, environment, low call out Fire service etc etc .Oh of course got to pay for councilors.
Waste of blooddy time going then…just about sums up the island council ive seen lorry loads of waste going all day ever day since the lockdown building vans materials so where has that all been going just blooddy typical of this back ward island..
No general waste being accepted, so TODAY is the day that the Bin Men start putting their orange (naughty step) stickers on black plastic bags instead of taking them as previously!
I’m not a conspiracy theorist but…?!
Dumped another load of my “general waste” in the sea today as it was not collected by the tax collectors!!!
I only have a van. I pay my council tax. I have rubbish I can’t dump. This is not helpful and will encourage fly tipping.
