It’s been called the Formula 1 of small sailing boats, but when one lost its mast in the Solent yesterday (Sunday) it became just a small helpless craft urgently needing assistance from Cowes RNLI lifeboat.
The lifeboat took to the waves after being told via Solent Coastguard that an International Moth had suddenly come off its high performance foils when it was dismasted off Gurnard Marsh.
First to assist the lone sailor was a 40ft catamaran; then the lifeboat took over to return both him and his disabled 11ft sailing hydrofoil to its base at Gurnard Sailing Club.
