UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a large fire in a rural location on the outskirts of Havenstreet tonight (Monday).
Several appliances from across the Island are currently on scene off Briddlesford Road.
Photos captured by Island Echo appear to show significant damage to an outbuilding, with flames that can be seen for quite some distance.
It is understood the fire broke out shortly before 21:20.
UPDATE @ 22:40 – Firefighters are continuing to battle the blaze, but do appear to be making head way.
A total of 3 appliances from Newport and East Cowes are on scene alongside the Incident Support Unit from East Cowes and water carriers from Ventnor and Freshwater.
The fire has broke out on land off Knight’s Cross, opposite Blacklands Lane. It remains unclear at this stage what has caught alight.
No one is thought to have been injured.
A retained crew from Cowes are standing by at Newport Fire Station tonight.
UPDATE @ 23:47 – The fire has been brought under control and crews are starting to prepare to withdraw from the incident.
Firefighters remain on the fire ground as Tuesday morning approaches.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 06:58 – Despite the best efforts of firefighters, a 15x10m barn has been completely destroyed. At its height the fire saw 5 breathing apparatus, 4 jets and a light portable pump used.
In an unexpected turn of events… at least 2 fire appliances remain on scene at Knight’s Cross this morning as they have become stuck in the mud. Efforts are underway – and have been since around 01:00 – to free the fire engines from the sticky situation.
