Lake Hill between Sandown and Lake has been closed in both directions today (Thursday) leading to heavy traffic congestion in the area.
The major road was closed at around 10:30 for ’emergency works’. It is unclear as to what works are taking place.
Lake Hill was closed for around 4 months between February and May 2023 and only opened up once again just over a month ago. At that time repair works were undertaken to the railway bridge above the road, however they took a lot long than expected leading to lengthy delays for motorists for an extended period of time.
As a result of the closure, traffic is having to once again divert via Perowne Way in both directions, with both lorries and buses struggling to navigate the winding and narrow roads in the housing estate.
Southern Vectis Route 2 and 3 buses are currently not serving the following stops in Sandown; Pier Street, The Heights and Lake Fairway.
UPDATE @ 14:00 – Island Roads have confirmed that Southern Water repairs are being undertaken at the top of Lake Hill.
No timescale has been given as to when the repairs will be done at this moment but Island Roads has confirmed they are working together to complete the necessary repairs as quickly as possible.
It says it all.More traffic chaos caused by a road closure without any warning or reasons why!!We had visitors to the island the other week who were surprised by the amount of closures and diversions here.Really!!
Absolute chaos! Just had to turn around in Sandown and abort my journey to Shanklin all roads in and out are blocked Don’t attempt it
Lake gets grid locked most of the time due to poor infrastructure.
When something goes wrong Lake is a total nightmare.

You can park a vehicle for months along any Road with “NO” MOT.
You can park a vehicle on Double Yellow Lines outside Sandown Pier or
Napoleons Landing.
You can park on the Pavement down Regent Street Shanklin

Yet Council Enforcement Officers will book Holidaymakers etc
for going over a few minutes on their parking time.

The so called authorities should be earning their money, not just taking it off a

Great Preston Road is a perfect place to leave a
Vehicle for months with no Mot.
They need to go get all the cars parked on the rd through prowne way moved or towed! Then double yellow it all, bloody p##s take all the old scrappers parked along that rd.
As quickly as possible would mean 24 hour working and proper investigation and planning. None of which have featured in any of Southern Water’s previous work in the area.
Would now be a good time to paraphrase the recent condescending statement from the council and remind IWCC that, even if they pay someone else to do it, they are still responsible for the state of the roads and the ability of people to get about without undue delay and disruption?
If it is anything like the farce in Nettlestone the repair will probably
be finished by the School Holidays.

glad i am not the only one who knows this. it is all about contracting, the longer they take the more money they get. what gets me is they said its going to take 3/ 4 days, I said what? why? and they said they need to watch the hole in case it burst again. Why they dug it in the middle of the road i will never know? Oh, yes its to cause havoc and its nice and peaceful for them to read a book or play games on their phones because they have closed the road.

A typical Island Road operatives day
Driver of truck picks up his Numpty partner.
They go and get breakfast.
Then thn go and look at the 1 job given to them.
They then go and get elevensies.
They then pick up the material required.
Then they go to the site of the job.
Then they sit in the van smoking, eating, looking at the newspaper / magazine and texting.
Then they do the 5 minute repair.
Then they go for an extended lunch.
Then they go and park up in Car Park overlooking the sea.
Then they go back to the Island Roads depot in Newport.
All in all they work less than 1/2 a day.

Don’t forget putting up the Road Closed signs about two miles from the actual work site and laughing as everyone has to drive two miles out of their way only to find another Road Closed sign.

I was driving from Shanklin to Newport a few days ago
I was behind a flat bed Island Roads truck.
He was pulling a roller on a trailer behind him,
he was displaying NO Number Plate on the Trailer, he was also driving
too fast.
THERE IS NO LAW AND ORDER IN ISLAND ROADS
Island Roads are either managed by Mickey or Minnie Mouse, what a poorly
run Company they are.
They do not understand traffic rules.
Since when did a whole road have to be closed to fix a burst water main? Are the Island Roads operatives so fat that they need to block the whole road to get their lazy arses to work? In years gone by, one lane would be blocked as little as possible with a light in operation. Island Roads are just a bunch of inconsiderate fat idiots.
Anyone know what proportion of our Council Tax goes to Island Roads? Must be a lot of it.

I wish a lot of the commenters on could tone down their endless carping and criticism and negativity. The road was open again this afternoon and traffic running smoothly. Well done everyone involved in sorting this out very quickly and efficiently.
